OT: cars and oil

Anyone know if it's a big problem to top up your car with a little too much oil (goes just beyond the max limit on the dipstick)? It says not to do this in the manual, but I don't know enough about cars to know if it will be a problem to put a little too much in.

    if it' only a millimetre or so, you should be ok. Beyond this, things can get difficult or even dangerous, especially on a diesel.

    A small amount over the max mark shouldn't matter, but for peace of mind you could always loosen the sump bolt, drain off a bit of oil, re-tighten the bolt and check the level again, adjusting as necessary.
    I once knew someone who filled the oil up to the brim of the filler cap, but had the sense to stop driving the car when it started billowing smoke ! They followed the above procedure and no lasting harm was done.
