Newbie Bike

Hi sorry for the age old question.I have a MTB & am looking to get a cheap road bike for a 5 mile commute to work.
I understand all the pros of getting a more expensive bike but i can only justify getting a cheap one at the moment.Budget will be approx œ300 - œ350.
I want to buy from my LBS so prices will be near retail i suppose.
So far in that price range i have seen
Dawes Giro 300/400
Giant SCR4.0
Carrera Virtuoso (Halfords)

What do i need to be looking for to get the best for my money...Frame?

just got the giant SCR4.0 and done few miles. looks nice for the price and a perfectly good frame to upgrade parts in the future.
