Mountain bikes and rack mounts
I'm looking to buy a mountain bike, with the primary purpose of fitting a child seat using a pannier rack. I already have the child seat and rack and have been using it on my wife's old mtb. Do most mountain bikes have rack mounts as standard? I am looking to spend about œ1000 and would like something that is good enough to race on occasionally as well. Any ideas from you lot would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the big brands will have rack fixing points, something like a secialized rockhopper pro I would think is fine.
You can by a rack with one side extended, but that wont fit the co pilot type of seat. To get around this I have the normal blackburn rack which came with a co pilot seat and used a few washers on the disc side. Its an easy and reliable fix for the disc problem.
You could of course use a a different type of child seat , the ones that attach to a seat post, but they tend not to be as good as the co pilot range and its no way to treat a good mtb.

You'll probably find more expensive bikes are *less* likely to have rack mounts (presumably on the assumption they are more likely to be used specifically for MTBing than for multipurpose).
My first though would be an On-One Inbred (steel frame though, and they are always tinkering with the design so worth checking the current model still has rack mounts). Kona's might be worth a look too (though be aware what look like rack mounts are sometimes just for mudguard stays, and you don't want to be mounting a rack/child seat on them).0
