I've noticed on my 531 framed Raliegh that the lug between head tube and down tube has cracked.[:(] Crack has formed from the corners of the cut out in the lug outwards:

What are my options?

Thanks

  • Frames can go like that in the end, few things last forever, you could have it repaired but quite often it will break somewhere else quite soon after, the times I have sen customers had a repair done and a new paint job only for that to happen.

  • It is repairable, but I have no idea how much it would cost. Lugs themselves often add little in the way of strength to the frame, though I would not offer further advice on that.[;)]

I didn't know people still used lugs for manufacturing frames, how quaint![:D]

Depends whether it's just a cracked lug i.e. the brazed joint doesn't extend around the lug to the tube, or whether the tube itself is cracked too. Somebody like Argos or Bob Jackson could give you a quote for a repair, but I expect it would be for more than you could pick-up a similar frame on e-bay - remember to include the cost of the respray too.
