Any roadies here use a cycle path...

...as part of their commute?
(or will admit to it?). Saw one the other day on a shared ped/cycle path. He just seemed so overdressed for the part!

I use the shared path over a bridge on my route ever day. Its a nice time to just pootle along at just over walking speed, and enjoy the view over the Thames.
Even when its raining! [:)]

I quite often do on my fixed roadie and pass other roadies doing it as well. Beats having HGV lorries whistle past you at 40+ mph!0

Isn't this a contradiction in terms? I don't anyway, they are more generally horrible, slow, dangerous etc. if you want to cycle at a reasonable pace as I always do. When my little girl is old enough to go out in a trailer though I will start using them for Sunday afternoon jaunts. I did use one this morning, but then I ran in today.

I use the cycle path that crosses the North Circular at the Ace Cafe. If you follow the road, it's usually so jam packed with cars etc that you can't even filter past. It would be foolish not to use the path out of some kind of roadie snobbery, saying that, the path is around 12ft across, so is plenty big enough to go at speed!!

There is one near me, absolutely useless. The trees and their roots have managed to disturb most of the surface (cracking/bumps etc) making it an interesting ride at the best of times. I have used it a few times but will admit I use the road instead.FCN 100

I do but not on my commute. There si a dual carriageway close to my house with a single lane road running either side for a good distance. You have to travel a short cycle path (with occasional broken glass etc [:(!]) to get to it but it's worth it. If I wen tthat way to work it would be on my commute.0

I use cyclepaths only to navigate really dangerous routes (only one that springs up to mind is one near the m25 near windsor), or to overtake cars that cant stop properly in traffic jams (near Kingston)...

A short (5m) section of shared path to get from Westminster Bridge into Belvedere Road.

There is a shared use cycle path (read pavement + paint) almost all the way down the Nottingham ring road (Valley Road) that I commute down every day. I have used it once.
Uneven surfaces, tree roots, giving way at every side street and driveway, people, parked cars, trees, pushchairs, bus stops, kerbs, dog walkers, broken glass, bikes coming the other way...
Sod that for a laugh, I'll use the road thankyou.
There is a very good cycle lane on Beechdae road that I am happy to use though.

Larkhall Rise rail bridge (going south - but not north), Tooting Common, Rose Hill Park and Clapham Common.
All of these, unusually for cycle facilities, make my journey more direct and quicker.

This question brings to mind Five Ways roundabout in Birmingham - you get a few roadies (including Brum's only cycle courier!) that obviously just can't stand the thought of going on the shared path underneath this frankly terrifying junction. I opt for the quiet life at this one.
This is pretty much the only cycle facility on my route though, which after reading some of the nightmares on this forum (particularly driver aggro), I'm glad of.0 -
Manchester cycleway between Chorlton and the Velodrome for me. Nice tarmac for most of the way and well looked after, cleared of glass etc by volunteers I think. Longer than the road route but a better workout for it.0

When working late shifts I used to go round the roundabout. A mixture of big groups drunk and dodgy types lurking underneath made me take the high road. The road isn't too busy late at night. There's always the road tunnel of course if you're going that way.0 -
I use the cycle path over Lambeth bridge - although in fact it's so narrow I'm actually in the lane, rather than the marked cycle path. No others on my route of any use to me - apart from through Hyde pk but that doesn't count / yes it does............ ok that one as well then

Like virtually every cyclist in the area, I use the Stevenage paths, daily in my case.0

It's years since I heard that. I've got it on vinyl somewhere. Pity my turn table is crocked!0 -
First commute on the road bike today, still using the cycle lanes for now.0

I use the cycle path along the A40 from Uxbridge to Northolt, then the Grand Union Canal towpath in to Harrow.
Thinking maybe I got the wrong bike to be honest. Maybe a tourer or a cyclocross instead of a roadie.0 -
The only one I ever use on a regular basis is over Kingston bridge - not even sure why I do, just habit.0
-
Cycle paths over bridges are cool, you can chill out and look at the river and scenery.

Yes. I use one in York that goes over the knavesmire and over the millenium bridge and past the barracks and through the uni campus. I always feel a right doofus in my full lycra doo dads with race bike and power tap going past fully dressed shoppers but what can you do? It is the safest route in for the last 3 miles of my journey.0

Crossing the North Circular on an aqueduct (Grand Union Canal towpath) is pretty cool, especially when you can look down on a long tail-back below. Most people sitting down in the traffic jam have no idea there are boats passing overhead!
So far I like the towpath portion of my commute, especially as a contrast to some of the busier sections of road. Not sure how well lit it will be when the evenings get darker though.0
