Gower Peninsula

Was watching the excellent Coast on the beeb last night and, seeing as i am just about to book a week off, was wondering what the cycling's like in and around the Gower Peninsula. I might take my road bike with me to explore.

If it's as good as it seemed to look, can anyone the best place to stay as well. It will only be for a maximum of two nights.

Cheers

Simon

    Hi Simon

The cycling in the South Wales area is excellent. The Gower offer opportunities for anything from short blasts from Swansea to Mumbles or away along to Rhossili. There are loads of opportunities to turn and have an almost infinite range of distances.

If you are in the area for a while then you must get up into the valleys, some fantastic views (at the top of fairly serious bumps) and again the range is huge.

One of my favourite routes in that area is through Porthcawl taking the back roads to Merthyr Mawr and carry the bike across the stepping stones at Ogmore Castle. From there up to Southern Down and onward to Llantwit major. Quiet roads and beautiful scenery.

    Have fun.

Ditto for me planning a trip after seeing last nights prog

Was planning to cycle from aberystwyth back home to leicester in a couple of weeks over a long weekend, though now considering making it my main week long tour for the year

been looking at maps today, is there a decent coastal route or is a lot of it main road?

    love coastal cycling, hate traffic!!

thanks for the replies. Well i've booked myself into a B&B in Trefin (about 8 miles from St. Davids) from Wednesday for three nights. Am taking my good road bike with me, so should get two rides at least in, plus some walking and hopefully some good shots with the camera.

I had a quick look on Bikely, com and the following came up searching for Haverfordwest. The last one (North County amble) looks good as it passes through Tregin so i can start it there.

    To be honest, can't wait.

    Hi Simon,
You're staying just up the road from me! Its nowhere near the Gower though!? Theres some lovely routes around the area. I'd recommend taking the coast road up to Strumble Head lighthouse. There's several ways of getting there and to be honest all routes are nice. Also if you head inland theres some nice rides out towards the Preseli Hills through the Gwaun Valley (try the teashop up the steepest farm track you'll ever see!). You can't go too far wrong just exploring the lanes either.
Trefin is minutes from the coast path so you're spoilt with the walking options too.
Have fun and I hope the weather improves for you.
