Display Stands

Hi,

I'm moving into a new flat soon which has no garage, so the bikes will have to live in the flat.

Any recommendations for stands?

I've found this one, which looks like an efficient use of space, but is it okay to hang a bike like from the wheel like this? Don't want to hurt my bike.

My LBS sells stands, dunno how much tho' go to
www.banjocycles.co.uk they will mail stuff out, basically its a pressed metal stand with a plastic protector, the rear wheel nut/QR skewer bolt stands in the notched piece on the non drive side, supporting the wheel, they are pretty secure, lots of his bikes are displayed on the shop floor using them, so they must be fairly safe.

Might not be able to get away with it in rented accomodation but I picked up one of these sort of contraptions :- http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... 5360017327 for about œ5 from lidls a few months back, stores my bike well out of harms way in the passageway. Not sure it would work so well in more modern buildings but our place is Victorian and the bike sits up in dead space and is handy to get out the front door for the commute.

not a solution for everyone but it can be a handy way of storing a bike.

Thanks for these options. I'm renting so probably won't start hammering contraptions into the walls. Does anyone have any thoughts on the one I put on my original post? It would still be the best option for me as it uses the vertical space well. I'm just uncertain about hanging the whole weight of the bike from the front wheel. Do you think this could cause any problems with the bike over a period of time? It's going to be hanging there for a year. Otherwise I'm tempted by the cheap floor stand from wiggle.

I don't think hanging a bike by the wheel is an issue. If you were worried, you could just rotate the wheel every week, so that it hung from a different point.

Or, are the hooks height adjustable? If so, could you lower it so that the weight is also taken by the back wheel? After all, the bike normally supports way more weight on each wheel, when you're riding it...

Thanks Arch. Normally, though, the force is pushing inwards on the wheel isn't it, towards the hub? The stand would be pulling the wheel out, not to mention the constant stress where the fork joins the frame - maybe better to hang it by the back wheel. It's one of those things where I'll probably be worried, no matter what logic is applied. The stand is œ100, so I would hope that it would work without hurting the bike. Can't decide.

Supprisingly, if you think about it this isn't the case. Spokes can withstand very little force in compression but lots in tension, so the weight is hanging from the top spokes. The rest of the spokes round the majority of the rim will also be in tension as they are keeping the rim from being deformed into an elliptical shape.
