Townsends Cycles used to be based Leigh, about 2 miles from Wigan... they had a huge factory there at one time... so everyone in Wigan had one if often seemed... they also produced bikes for Universal

... me... I am no bike snob but I would not have one of them given to me!

it always amazes me how some people still think you can get a good bike that will last for under œ100. You can spend that in two weeks on petrol!

The rear mech pictured appears to have been made from tin foil lol

The bike in question...no..i wouldnt even pay œ30 for it, you can tell just by looking at the components.
But...Townsend and Universal USED to make ok bikes for the money. Ive had both through the family (kids and wifes)..TBH they lasted and were reliable. Sadly, thats probably not the case anymore.

On the sunny side..these sub œ100 bikes have had a knock on effect.
I got my son a perfectly decent, oldish but fully functioning Raleigh MTB from the carboot for œ12.....œ12 [:D] you cant beat it.
I offered the guy a tenner, but he wasnt having it. He said the markets collapsed....he used to get œ30 or œ40 for bikes like tjis 3 years ago...now, no-one wants to pay.

The moral...if you know what youre looking at, you dont get ripped off or let down. If you dont know...tough, you learn the hard way.

My Dad was telling me about a 'good deal' he'd seen in the back of a magazine - two (yes, two !) bikes, his-n-hers (i.e. one blue and one purple), for œ89.99.

They will be cheap shyte, made in China from 25kg of recycled beantins, but being honest, my Dad and his 'girlfriend' (if that's the word) are both 70 and he only wants it for sunny Summer days when out with his caravan, so that's probably a 15miles max ride.

But having seen this, if does decide to buy them I'll check the brakes and gears...

why is it sunny all week yet rains at weekends ?
