I need a water bottle and cage for my mountain bike.
Do all cages fit on mountain bikes?

I have seen this one at Evans cycles http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=12327

Will this bottle fit it as they are both the same make? http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=10904

Thanks [:)]

So will this be all I need, I just fix it onto my bike?

I have seen this one as well. Do you think you get all the fixings with it etc, do you fix it to your seat post?

There should be mounts on your frame - two allen head bolts? You just unscrew them, pop the cage on and put the bolts back in.

Edited to add - The seat post mount is an extra, not included in the price of that bottle.

Can't see anywhere to mount a bottle [:(] No Allen head bolts.

Oh yes, thanks, just seen the pic of the bottle cage mount.
So I will need that also?

    cyclinggirl,

You could put mounts like these on.

Thanks Aido, that looks like the sort of thing I need. Does anyone know an online retailer that would stock something like that?

I know the Ed Bike Co Op online shop sells them but they'll charge you for delivery.

P.S. They will scratch your paint a bit. If that's a problem put some duct tape underneath.

Thanks so much Aido and Eurostar, you have been very helpful [:D]

Would this cage be the correct type to fit on the cross bar?

Do you mean downtube ? The bit where your gear levers used to go ? Just copy where other bikes have them, and yeah - put insulation tape round the frame to avoid it getting scratched. What frame is it ?
  • I wouldn't recommend the Profile Stryke on your link, cyclinggirl. I bought two last year and both broke in exactly the same place within a month of light use.

Nobody ever got laid because they were using Shimano

Have a look at this pic http://www.bicycledoctor.co.uk/parts.html

People generally fit a bottle cage on the seat tube or the down tube, or both. Your choice.

The crossbar is also known as the top tube and you don't put a cage there because the bottle falls out.

Bottle cages - if you just want a cheap simple one this will do and should last for ever http://wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx? ... 5360007965

You could even fit the cage to your saddle with one of these brackets http://wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx? ... 5360016510

P.S. Just looked at your link to discountbicycles.co.uk - that's dead cheap for a bottle and cage. It should work with the Elite straps.

Generally speaking any cage fits any bottle. They're nearly all a standard shape.

Seems to have lots of options for fitting cages to bikes without the requisite holes.

Most bikes have at least one set of holes for a bottle cage. They may or may not have bolts already in them. Double check you haven't got any.

For bikes without, I think the Zefal Gizmo is the best adapter. See http://tinyurl.com/28lx83 . They come in different sizes - check the Zefal website or ask your dealer for advice on this.

Bottle cage I recommend is Tacx Tao.

  • Is the cage you posted the plastic one? I was going to get one but the lbs told me how so many people had returned them after they broke.
