What to drink on a long/fast tour???

I've mentioned it a few times before but I am doing Le Jog in 7 days in August with some heavy mileage, up to 140-130 per day.

On recent rides I have started to flag between 70-100 miles.Often this is from a push for more speed (running past time expected back by the missus). I am eating all through the ride and am well hydrated. Sometimes a shared can of coke does the trick.

For the actual ride I was wondering about using PSP22 sachets for the latter part of the days. Alternatively I have heard of tennis players drinking coke mixed with alot of water.

I imagine that I could just keep sharing a can of coke with the guy that is doing it with me. Maybe at 70miles, 100 and 120?

I have seen some good homemade solutions on this forum but cant seem to find them at the moment.

Cheers,

Ed

The coke is mixed with water because the sugar concentration is too great undiluted ant that has an effect on absorption rate. I used the coke and water mix when doing a lot of running - never used it on the bike, but sometimes think of it. the only problem with the mix is that you aren't getting any electrolytes, as you would with a sports drink.

  • sports drink or coke for a week would kill my guts - I've just changed to "nuun" for electrolyte replacement in my bottles, plus regular flapjacks / sandwiches for food. Seems to be working so far!

Same here. Tried Nuun tablets for the first time this year and it's a lot less fiddly and far lighter than taking powder. Tastes OK too.

This question was asked a couple of days ago and everyone replying (but me) suggested just buying stuff from shops as you go. I actually prefer to have something which (in theory, at least) is replacing minerals lost in sweat on 12-hour rides. And with the tablets, all you need to do is find a tap, not a shop!

You need to use these things on your training rides.
Personally I think energy bars are the way forward, or just keep eating.
Carbo drinks from powder would be better than water, but you may want a change.

I'd maybe use a coke once towards the end of a ride as a treat, not more than that really - its not good for sports. And let it go flat a bit.
  • You need to try a few before 'the big one'. I've tried products that seem okay for the first time, but after the 6th, it is clear that it disgrees with me (stomach cramps, etc). you want to find this out whilst training, not on lejog.

Torq is quite pleasant, but I don't know if it has everything you need?
