Oh Granny please?
I've got a couple of really nice old bikes with a 6 speed & 5 speed Campag block on the rear. I was wondering if I can add a granny to these? Smaller low gear on these old ones in the days when men were men or didn't care about getting off on the hills. LBS says I will have to change the whole block but I thought this was only the case with Shimano. Anybody here know?

? not quite sure what you want here. Do you want to put a small ring on the front chain set or put a big ring on the back, if the former then the crank will have to be a triple, the later I'm not sure about.

Apologies for confusion. Add or exchange a big granny to rear mech.

On modern campag the rings are seperate, or in other words not in a block as in Shimano, so you may be able to buy just the big ring you require and change that. How ever if your LBS says differently let the campag experts have their say.
Good luck.

Old 5/6 speed gears use a freewheel or 'block' where the entire freewheel and sprocket assembly screws onto the rear wheel. Modern bikes use cassettes where seperate splined sprockets fit over a freehub which is part of the hub assembly - they are not inter-changeable. Some freewheel assemblies are 'dismantleable' e.g. Maillard, but you may have problems finding spares these days. However, you can still buy basic 5-6 speed freewheels - Shimano Cadet - with the 'granny' gear you ask for about a tenner - most LBS have these in stock.0
