Measure twice, cut once! Best to use an old stem as a saw guide and wrap some tape round the steerer to prevent the fibres splaying.

Yeah an old stem is perfect. Ask your LBS if they have one in their spares bucket.

Also, nice new hacksaw blade and a mask please.

Make sure you use a fine toothed blade (32 tpi ideally) and let the blade cut under it's own weight. Don't apply much pressure.

  • so angle grinder no good then[:D]

    thanks for the replies
  • Or use a tungsten carbide grit edged hack saw blade. I was amazed at how easily the carbon steerer cut with it. Then carefully sand or file the edges. Once again I was amazed by how soft the edge seemed to be.

I think I measured about a dozen times and put off the moment of cutting for about 2 days. I used a Park Tool saw guide clamped to a workmate to get a straight cut .... ish [:D]
    Good luck.

If you can't find an old stem then use a engine hose pipe clamp. You can get these from any automotive store. Agree with the other posters - measure twice cut once. And taping the area to be cut will stop the fibre spliting.
