Crank Brothers cleat question

I have just fitted a pair of Crank Brothers Smarty pedals, they are supposed to be SPD compatable so I didn't change the cleats in my shoes despite the Crank Brothers supplied ones looking slightly different.
I have tried and tried but can't clip in (47 miles on tiptoes!), am I just doing it wrong or do I need to use the supplied cleats?, and if the latter is the case will they fit the SPD pedals on my other bikes?
Has anyone else had the same trouble?
Thanks guys...

'SPD compatible' just means the cleats use the SPD holes in the sole plate. You have to use specific Crank Bros cleats with the pedlas. Crank Bros cleats won't work in SPD's either.

    Curses !

But thanks for saving me the trouble of trying to prize the old cleats out of my shoes.

I shall take this as an excuse to buy new (better) shoes for the new (better) bike.

Word of warning on the Smarties (I've got two pairs btw). Great pedal but, so far as I can figure, not user serviceable. The bearings on mine have gone horribly saggy and rattly within a year.
When you set up the new cleats, don't forget that the release angle will change depending on which shoe you put them on.
Not a specific answer to your question but all knowledge is good. [:D]

Shame about the serviceability-they do rebuild kits for most of their other models.

Hmmm, yes. I'd been wondering what the difference between the Smarties (about œ35) and the Candies (œ60) was. Turns out the serviceability is the difference. Mea culpa, I should have checked more closely, but I was mighty peeved when I found out.
