Worn chain ring options?
My commuter is about 17 years old with Shimano Deore XT drive train from that period. As I have used it mostly on the road, the middle chain ring has seen most wear and its now time for new chain and middle chain ring. I was wondering if it was still possible to get a replacement. There is some writing stamped on the chainring which loogs like 'SG C 36'. I presume this means 36 teath superglide, but am not sure. The cassette is 7 speed.
I was thinking of going for an SRAM chain, are they OK to use with Shimano drivetrain?
I don't really want to junk the drivetrain as I like the thumbshifters and spread of gears, plus funds are tight at the moment.
Cheers

SRAM chain deffo ok with Shimano components.
May need to get a new rear cassette/freewheel as well otherwise it will just accelerate wear of the new chain and shifting may be poorer as well.0 -
Standard 110 PCD chainrings still plentiful - you don't need a Shimano one either, but can buy budget ones from Stronglight or good ones from the likes of TA or Middleburn - depends how much you want to spend. I agree on replacing the cassette too - may as well do the whole drivetrain at once, otherwise chances are the chain will skip and you'll wear out the parts quicker.0

Thanks for the info.
I really want to replace with as good parts as I can afford. I was told by the LBS that decent quality components are no loger available for 7 speed systems. Is this true? If they are available how much would I expect to pay for a half decent 7 speed cassette, free wheel, chain and middle ring?

There's be no problem getting a chain ring, it's presumably 5-arm at that age - just make sure you get a new ring with the right bolt circle diameter (AKA 'BCD', diameter of an imaginary circle passing through the chain-ring bolts).
Any Shimano or SRAM chain for 8-speed or below will do fine, and as andyr says you would be well advised to replace the rear cassette as well (as well as accelerated wear, there's a good chance your new chain will skip with a worn cassette).0 -
I run a 1992 Kona MTB with thumbies, 7-speed, etc.
SRAM PC48 or 58 chains are quite happy on 7-speed Shimano MTB : they're better than Shimano in that they have a joining link rather than a pin, so you can get them on and off easily if needed.
You will need a 110BCD ring, middle, 36tooth, 4 or 5 bolt
And a Shimano 7-speed cassette - but check how many teeth : 12-28, 13-30 ?
(not freewheel, if you have XT it'll be a cassette)
Example prices ? A a quick check around gives these as examples...
- PC58 chain œ9.95 at Merlin Cycles, PC48 at œ5.95 at Ribble
- HG30 cassette 7speed œ13.95, HG70 œ17.95 at Merlin
- RaceFace 36tooth 110BCD middle ring (says for 8/9sp - will work on 7) œ22.95 at Chain Reaction
why is it sunny all week yet rains at weekends ?0 -
Cheers Andy
Is the HG70 cassette much better than the HG30 as if it is the small price difference seems to be well worth it? Same question with the two different cahins.
Thanks for all the help.

A chainset of that era will definitely be 5-arm 110pcd - used to have one myself. If you post on the Wanted board, I expect there's some people might have an old chainset / rings kicking around - I did 'til quite recently.0
