Hi all, which of the following is the more durable design, the Rixen&Kaul minimap holder or the Polaris equivalent? the former i think uses a QR system, which i am led to believe rattles badly on occasions! so i am quite intrigued to find out how you secure the Polaris? all replies appreciated.

  • Yes the Rixen & Kaul can indeed rattle a bit, not always though, it is simply the bracket interface, nothing that a bit of Heath Robinson rubber slotted into gaps can't solve should that happen.

The Polaris made MapTrap has three fitting points, two on bars one on stem making it a more permanent feature, with care it can be removed although as you can see I leave mine on as it is quite neat, they are large zip ties that with care can be removed, although it is a bit of a fiddle to so, although it does not rattle, at least not when something is in the clip, when carrying nothing in the clip both versions can rattle a bit where the perspex meets, one of mine does so I just have a wedge the folded freezer bag that I use to weather proof the route sheets.

For both, clear suitable sized sealable Freezer bags are ideal to act as a weather proof cover as the map/route sheet are often exposed, bearing in mind both are clips and not covers, although Rixen &Kaul have now introduced a bigger called a 'Freeliner' that is more of a cover, although I expect they are aimed more at the leisure touring market than the mile eating Audax riders

  • I abandoned the Rixen and Kaul Maptrap because it would not stop rattling despite my ministrations. However... if you have an old Cateye HL500 front light (everybody has one in the shed, don't they?) you can take the fitting off the bottom of the light (easily done) and bolt it to the back of the perspex clip. Use a domed-head bottle cage bolt, and a nylock nut on the back side.

Bingo! rattle-free, instantly demountable Ultimate Maptrap. I added a "gasket" cut from an old inner tube between bracket and perspex to prevent unwanted swivelling.
  • "Gasket" that was the word I was trying to think of [:D], been playing on my mind, funny how little things....
