Looking to ride a stage of the the tour this year, I was wondering how long I'd have before the gendarmes kick you off. I intend to do one of the mountain stages

If you're looking to do the whole stage, I would think you would have to start the day before [:)]

We rode up Ventoux on race day a few years ago about four hours before the caravan. Well, four hours ahead when we stopped about 2k from the summit - we were about six hours in front at the bottom. The marshalls were stopping people half an hour later.

Rule of thumb is approximately 2 hours.
However, two years ago the gendarmes were stopping people cycling up the Galibier at Lunch time and the race wasn't due over until late afternoon. Probably due to congestion! It was a nightmare.
