Why is it that some people on this site insist on recommending Mavic Open Pro rims in answer to <u>any</u> question about wheels?

They are okay (I've got 2 pairs of wheels with them) but they are not special in any way (weight, aero, strength).

It's like saying that a Shimano 105 groupset is the best, regardless of what riding you are doing.

Will these people acknowledge that when I ask "which factory built wheels should I buy", it's because I want factory wheels, not bl**dy OP on shimano/campag hubs!?!?! [:(!]

They should be used for training, commuting or racing on a budget. They are not the answer for cyclo-cross, racing, time-trialling, touring or track-riding. This is because there are better rims for the money for those purposes.

So can people stop simply gobbing-off for the sake of it - if you don't know any rims other than Open Pro, please don't inflict your narrow opinion on others.

    Please list some rims that are lighter and as strong/er because I am looking right now. To be used for training and racing with a Powertap.
  • Why worry about weight when your strapping a huge powertap hub in the middle. Get a 16 spoke powertap and a Bontrager Race x-lite rim. Or easier buy the whole thing complete. Thtn you have strong and Aero, much more important than weight for UK riding.

    How robust are the single eyelet DT RR1.1 rims? I've seen some comments with regard to these cracking.
    I note that the double eyelet model is heavier than an Open Pro?
    How do the braking surfaces compare with regard to stopping power and longevity?

    Do have a link to the IRC Cadence wheels/rims?
    Not come across these - would be interested to know more.

    The Velocity rims look nice.

    Of the three, which do you prefer, and how do they compare? Also, where can you source these from in the UK? Preferably in the South of England.

    I recently built a pair of wheels with Velocity Aeroheads, combined with bladed aero spokes and AM Classic hubs they are light, fast and look nothing like Open Pros! 53x12 now importing Velocity rims - already planning a pair with bling-tastic gold rims! But in terms of the original post, I agree, for weight, stiffness and performance, you can't match top range factory wheels.

    Thanks for that Down the Road. Much more informative than the overall weight of a wheel given that apparently the law of inertia when applied to a wheel means that a 'g' off the rim of a rotating wheel is equivalent to a 'kg' off a static part of bike. Light tubes and tyres being even more of an advantage in this case.

    I was considering the Velocity Aerohead rims but 53x12 enquired with Velocity who reckoned the rim would be too flexy for a 70kg sprinter

  • Campag Neutron are a good value all round that is suitable to race on.

    Even better now they have dropped the price this year now the ultras are out.

    Friend has some MTB rims and rates them. They seem good.
