Bit of both really. I was gently winding you up earlier.!
In my mind you were dossing down behind a hedge on the A12!
I will concede that I would probably do the same in remote locations - but not in the UK, France or anywhere like that.
Anyway, home time, have a nice weekend!0 -
have a good one.

Right , I'll expand my credo ever so slightly and declare that I'm now into my sixties in years . And it's what I want to do .
" wash in a puddle " ??. Another one liner from Spawn suggests he hasn't read my pointer towards streams , lakes , rivers and other public watering places in which this planet abounds .
" it's what stops you stinking " ... again he'd be most surprised to learn that after a month or so of being on the road and all the junk that's been larded on to one's body at home has been sweated out , you cease to stink anymore . You wash your clothes and yourself more out of habit than a desire to smell more appealing . That and it freshens you up . But , stink ? Nah ."Lick My Decals Off, Baby"0 -
What jibi says
Wild camping is fun and liberating. I count myself lucky, very lucky, to learn at an early age that it works fine at least as often as any other accommodation away from home
And you can wash important bits well, if you go carefully, with a 500ml squirty bottle.
Florence Nightingale said words to the effect any resourceful woman can keep herself clean with a pint of hot water and a little privacy.
If you don't know, don't flame
If you still have to flame, at least be original
(great photos, btw, jibi)0 -
Merc and thomas
As cabbie said
It was just a bit of a wind up.
and he conceded that he would do the same.
Nice to see I am not alone though.
I enjoyed getting to the places and taking the pictures, glad you like them.

Thanks, George
Yes, I was being a bit harsh. It's a bit of raw nerve...0 -
No probs
there are some the credit card tour and some who seek that little bit extra
But in the end we are all cyclists
Don't forget that we all end up in a B&B/hostel/hotel sometimes.

On the subject of not washing much, anyone had good results with the fabrics that claim not to stink? I'm thinking of merino and X-Static. Anyone tried not washing a merino cycling jersey for a day or three? I think if i did that with an ordinary polyester one I would asphyxiate myself.

What\'s the point of going out? We\'re just going to end up back here anyway
0 -
I've got some merino wool socks that didn't smell even after several days continuous use so if the jerseys are the same then you should be stink-free after a couple of days.
More problems but still living.....More problems but still living....0 -
That's encouraging. X-Static socks are better than ordinary socks but not that good.

Hear hear. Nothing beats wild camping. Camp sites are detestable. Some of my best travel experiences have been having a hillside overlooking a valley all to myself. I camped above an empty ski resort in the Pyrenees once. Didn't see anyone except goats. When I woke up I was above the clouds. Just like looking out of an aeroplane window, with a few peaks showing through. It was so peaceful - all I could hear was the odd goat bell. There was a layer of ice under my Thermarest but I was very cosy in my sleeping bag. Then I cooked bacon and eggs while the goats scrunched their grass.

that's a beautiful thought Eurostar!! Perfect peace.

beautiful. I can't wait to get off the beaten track and into the Outback, watching the wildlife and birds, gazing at the brilliant starry sky without light pollution, and without the distraction of campers. I may camp near a campsite sometimes for socialising purposes, but will retire thereafter to a comfortable distance away. Therein lies the beauty of the Raven - it's pretty good offroad as well as on.
I can stop every day or so at a roadhouse or campsite and get a shower and 2000 calorie mega-meal to top myself up.

This isn't a one thing or the other thread. There's credit card touring and there's wild touring. They're both fun. Sometimes it's fun to do both on the same tour. THERE ARE NO RULES!
To those who think that being 40 something is too old to sleep on a park bench - I'm 58 and I'd never consider sleeping on a park bench. I might sleep under it. But more likely I'd be nowhere near a park. I'd be out in the country.
Those who worry about Mr Farmer. No! You don't sleep in the middle of a bloody field FFS. Find a copse, a spinney, a wood, whatever. Have you never been in the country , for Christ's sake?
Spot your intended pitch - go to the local pub for beer and/or meal. Arrive back at pitch just as dusk is falling and put tent up and sleep. In the morning you're gone. No probs!
