zipp 404 tubular - glue/tape?
Hi there,
I am going to be purchasing the zipp 404 tubular wheel set.
A - What tubular tyres do you recommend?
B - Do you use Glue? - if so, what glue do you reccommend?
C - Do you use tape? - what tape?
Lastly, those who have the wheel set, what is your opinion on them?
Many thanks
Mark

A. Continental GP4000 tubular
B. Glue Always glue
C. Continental glue
Lastly everyone has them so I'm bored by them.Racing is life - everything else is just waiting0 -
The Tufo Extreme tape I've been using seems really good. It's very easy to use (you can properly seat the tub before it comes into contact with the adhesive. It also seems to grip very securely (unlike the Velox stuff I initially tried). There are a number of good tubs, but I suppose it comes down to the type of riding you do. I haven't tried many - some of the cheaper Contis and Vredesteins, which weren't that great. I tried the expensive Dugast silk ones, and they were comfy, light, and responsive. However, I made a mess of installing them, so they didn't last long (this was before I discovered the Tufo tub tape). I've ordered a couple more back in April, but they haven't turned up yet - I assume it's a busy time for them. I've also used the 'Tufo Elite < 160g' tubs. They're very light (about 150g) but seem pretty tough, the innertubes must be butyl, or butyl coated, as they retain air for weeks, and you can use the Tufo sealant to prevent or repair minor punctures. They're quite narrow though, and I find them harsh on rough roads if they're pumped up to high pressures.0

sorry if I'm hijacking a bit but how long do you have to wait after installing tyres with glue till you can ride them? I'm getting some new wheels which hopefully are arriving on Monday or Tuesday and want to race them on Wednesday for 5 days.0

Leave the glue to dry overnight or until it feel dry to touch. I agree about Tufo Extreme tape - easier and a lot, lot less messier than glue - it also comes off pretty cleanly too which is good for carbon rims cos you can't really use solvents.0

A) Vittoria evo corsa cx or kx
like down the road - always glue
c) Continental rim cement

Sorry Monty Dog but I have to disagree with this old wives tale.
It obviously takes a bit of commom sense about what kind of solvent is used. I use both acetone and white spirit to remove old glue and to clean my carbon track wheels with zero concern and zero detriment to the wheels.

Have a read of this.I’m a sprinter – I warmed up yesterday.0 -
I have zipp and hed wheels. I always use tape - I tried glue once - what a mess I made!0

a) Hutchinson Gold
b) No
c) Tape, Tufo extreme tape0 -
I'm going to be using conti glue. How much do I need for each tyre? would a tube (25g) be enough per tyre or do I need more?
Thanks0 -
Get 2 tubes to be on the safe side. You need to coat the wheel and tyre twice before rolling on the tyre.
Make sure you leave inflated fo 8 hours before riding.Racing is life - everything else is just waiting0 -
I have only used the velox tape, but I shall give the tufo tape a go.
For tubs, I would recommend Vittoria, Veloflex, and Continental.
Nashcom, do you think that the Dugast experience is worth it? How many miles usage did you get, and what did you use them for?
BTW, I would use PX 50/82/101....or Xentis, rather than use 404's.
