Early morning Sunday riders

I live in North London. I ride with a mate out to Hertfordshire (back country lanes etc) every Sunday morning.

We both have wives, kids and jobs. It is therefore not an option to meet at 8.30-9 am, ride for 3-4 hours plus cake and pub and get home in the middle of the day.

So we meet at 6.30am and we are back by 10.30 to be with the family for pretty much the whole day. Can't ride Saturdays at all.

I would really like to be part of a club (bunch riding and all that). Is there a club in our area that caters for this sort of timing or would anyone be interested in starting one up with me? I see lots of lonely souls out riding at that time.

  • have a look on the british cycling website and look under clubs and see which one is closer to you.

If you do ride with a club you can always do a few miles before the start of the ride, then not do the whole ride. We often have club members dropping out after an hour or so to get home at a decent time.

Where in London are you and how far do you ride?

HW: I have checked for local clubs on the BC website. That's how I know they leave at 9ish and dont get back til lunchtime.

Pirahna: We ride about 60 miles total. Highgate out to Herts and back again. It's a good idea to hook up with a club ride for an hour or so in the middle. Do you know which club would be good to try to meet up with?

So it's not just me then!! I live on St Ann's road just off Green Lanes and do exactly the same thing - drag myself out of bed at about 6am have some breakfast and creep out of the door, bike over the shoulder in my socks. It would be a big incentive to get out of bed at that time if I knew some other poor b*gger was doing it as well!!

I have occasionally been out with some of the guys (and girls) from Two Wheels Good, which is great but they get back around 1pm. (I won't be getting any pancakes if I come back at that time of day!!)

I would be up for a ride this Sunday if you're interested. Where do you meet?
  • Me too, 6am every Sunday 40/50, miles and back before 10am. The rest of the day with my family. Its a nice routine.

I do the same thing, and I'm just round the corner on Lawrence Road (just off West Green Road)! Although, I've being going out more on Saturdays recently.

There were a few of us that had a regular ride going on Sundays leaving from the Woodford area at 9am but my wife and I only have the Sunday off together, so I generally need to get back before noon- it's not worth the trouble otherwise. We also tried a Sunday with the Two Wheels Good guys, a really nice bunch and worth going out with if you have the time.

I'll keep an eye out for you and wouldn't mind meeting up one Sunday for a wee venture. I usually go out towards Essex but a change would be welcome.

I'm another one of those early morning riders. In summer time after a 5:30am start, I usually pass the local Chippenham Wheelers on their way to start their rides just as I'm finishing for the day.

Buy the other half the paper and make her breekie in bed and allow her the luxury of a long lie in . You get brownie points plus you get the time to disappear for a few hours and back at lunch time . Always worked for me .

We're probably a bit too far out for you in Bishops Stortford. There are a few clubs around though. Herts Wheelers publish ride details on their site. North Road might be another option as I think they meet around the Potters Bar area. If you can't get hold of anybody from North Road call Darren in the Potters Bar Shorters shop. Welwyn don't do club runs in the summer.

There is also a Does Finsbury Park CC exist thread running somewhere on here, they might be Ok for you as well.
