Campy: gradual 9 to 10 speed conversion?
Campag seem to be phasing out their 9 speed components.
I have complete 9 speed kit (double chainset).
I realise that the most expensive part of converting will be the levers.
My question is:
Are there components which I could change to 10 speed which will work with 9 speed set-up so that I can spread the cost gradually.
Eg could I run a 10 speed rear derailleur with my 9 speed levers and 9 cog cassette?

Yes, but the news is even better. You can use all your 9-speed components with 10-speed Ergos and cassette. Don't even have change the right-hand Ergo as it can be converted by changing a couple of parts.
There will be a small indexing error if the rear derailleur is a pre 2001 9-speed model, but some who have tried the combination say it's OK in practice.
This isn't strictly necessary but to optimise the rear mech for 10-speed you can simply change the 9-speed jockey wheel washers for 10-speed ones. This will make the cage a fraction narrower.
Shifting may be very slightly sub-optimal with a 9-speed chainset (10-speed ones place the chainrings slightly closer together), but so what?, frankly.
As for the front mech - I can't see any difference at all with the so-called 9 and 10-speed triple ones I have at the moment.
The hub takes both 9 and 10-speed cassettes.

Pete, that sounds good. I have pre 2001 Daytona 9 speed ergos - can these be modified to 10 speed and by whom??

www.italiancycleproducts.co.uk should be able to do that for you, Terry. Give them a call/email.
It would be wise to have the indexing springs replaced at the same time as these wear out.

I agree entirely with Pete. The only difference between 9 and 10 speed front mechs is the inclusion of a plastic insert to narrow the cage - I've been running a 9 speed front mech on 10 speed for years with no problems. You can convert the Ergos yourself, but it is fiddly, so Italian Cycles are probably the best - they can advise on the other parts as well. You may as well wait until you wear out your existing chain and cassette and then do the conversion all at once. - Even with a new cassette and chain, you shouldn't be looking at more than œ1000

I'm running 8 speed ergos with a 10 speed rear mech and (shimno 600)
7 speed hub with perfect shifting.0
