NHS Dentists ..

Mrs jamesAC has an abcess under her tooth [:(], so she went to see our regular NHS dentist.

He told her that she would need root canal treatment, and he would not be able to do it under the NHS. He quoted a price of œ(insert large number here).00 to do the job.

Q) Does anyone know why an NHS dentist can decline to offer treatment (which is offered by the NHS) under the NHS scheme, and oblige patients who are in considerable pain to either have the tooth out or enter into a very expensive course of treatment privately?

  • I think it's because certain NHS treatments are only available in certain circumstances. The dentist is probably limited under the contract to extracting the tooth.

This is the same example I gave on another thread. Private treatment differs from NHS. NHS go for cheap extraction, private saves the tooth expensively.

I would have thought for the sake of saving a tooth it is worth paying for and sacrificing something else isn't it. And yes I know the price as I have had 3 of them!
  • I'm surprised that the NHS contract doesn't require dentists to extract all teeth on the first appointment and issue steel dentures.

I've had root canal treatment on the NHS - do dentists have different NHS contracts in different areas, then?

    Not so.

I pay National Insurance for health care. NHS root canal treatment is available (see leaflet at http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsand ... /DH_073216). Why wont my dentist meet his obligations?

I'd forgotten that if the NHS bought them, they'd be paying ten times the market price despite having a dedicated team of 8,000 working on the procurement.

As a former NHS dentures I'd be surprised if the NHS contract has changed to exclude endodontics. And from the leaflet shown it hasn't.

Go back and check and raise it with the Primary care people at your health board if the dentist is still reluctant.

I emailed the PCT about this, and they suggested that I might like to pass the details of my dentist to them, so they can raise the issue. Trouble is, they (non unreasonably) want my wife's details .. would you want to put yourself in the hands of a dentist about whom you've just made a complaint?

    ... this won't hurt!!

This whole shambles is a legacy of the Thatcher era, where vocations disappeared, and the making of money became the sole purpose of life. So even human suffering can be used as a means of making money. Utterly disgraceful.

Quite right, it's totally unrealistic to expect a Labour government to change anything in the last ten years they've been in power.

They could at least propose it, whether it goes through the house is another matter.

Interesting that mercury barometers, thermometers etcetera are to be banned because, paraphrasing Lord Rooker, mercury is horribly toxic with no safe level of exposure; yet the NHS will continue to stuff peoples mouths with mercury amalgam.
Weird; not safe on the wall, but safe enough for the NHS to put into your mouth ??

As I understand it, it depends what form its in.

Look at common salt (NaCl) - without a bit of it, we'd all die. But the constituent parts (a highly reactive metal Sodium and a poisonous gas Chlorine) are each deadly.

I think if one were to swill mouthfulls of Mercury, one would be in big trouble. But the stuff used for fillings is in the form of an amalgam, and the Mercury is fairly ([:D]) safe.
