Hi all, i brought a giant fcr2 about 10 weeks ago and took it back for its 1st free service last friday also while i was there i decided to check out he specialized seat fitting service and brought a alias saddle which was fitted by the shop mechanic (no such a sore butt now[:)]) , after the service it was fine, did a 26 mile ride on sunday and all fine, went out last night and noticed this really loud creaking noise. at first i thought it was the handlebars but after riding without any real pressure on the bars or no hands (when on quiet lanes) it still creaks. This bike does have a carbon seat post and i pretty sure it creaks when peddling and when free wheeling. Any ideas or should i be taking it back to the lbs to get checked over.

Take it back to the shop for them to investigate - there's so many places where a creak can eminate from these days, it's had to give specific advice. It could be anything from over-tight wheel QRs, seatpost or saddle rails, bottom bracket shell, cranks, chainring bolts or pedals, headset bearings or stems clamps

Does it creak when you are out of the saddle, if it does it's not likely to be the seatpost. If it does, and bearing in mind you have just had a new saddle, it could be the saddle clamp, or the seatpost clamp, that's not tight enough.

yes just tested and it still creaks when out of the saddle, its weird i cant sort of pin point where the noise comes from, sounds like its comoing from the frame maybe

I had a creak recently that sounded like it was coming from the bottom bracket so i tried taking various bits off (including the chainset) and regreasing them which made no difference. I finally tracked it down to the rear wheel skewer, and loosening it slightly fixed the problem. I was convinced it was the bottom bracket area of the bike though! I agree with Monty Dog, it could be any number of things, it may not necessarily be the frame.
  • i get a creak from the front of my scr3, it it the brake cable outers rubbing when i turn.

My next guess, and i've been through this myself with a few bikes,is that some spokes might be creaking (only ever encountered this in low spoke count wheels); or (and more likely) its coming from the chainset/pedal/bottom bracket interface - but this shouldn't be as noticeable when you are freewheeling. I've assumed from what you have said that the stem and bars are not likely to be causing the problem.

I had the same as XTCRider - or was it the gear outer cables? The metal ends on the cables just where they're fastened to the down tube, anyway.

Otherwise, there was a thread here a while ago. I can't find it, but it was to the effect that Giant SCR's were creaking at the seat post, and the advice was to grease the seat post. I think these were alu seat posts, so I don't know if carbon would be the same or not.

I had a horrible creaking on my SCR3 that didn't go away when out of the saddle, but it did turn out to be the seatpost in the end. Or, at least, removing the seatpost, greasing and replacing it cured the problem completely. For a few months...

In my naivety, i assumed that the flexing in the frame was sufficient to make the seatpost creak, even when not sitting on it [?]

I posted on a similar topic in Know How recently and got given an excellent link identifying every possible annoying noise and possible solutions. Here is the link to the thread - the link is about 5 posts down from Ale
