I would have thought that it wouldn't make a "real" difference. It only contains around 100 calories and that if your riding hard you'd burn through that in 10 to 15 minutes.

You have enough energy stored in your blood to run a Marathon

If your racing then drinking fluids would make more of a difference and then you could always add some energy drink to that if you wanted.

How long is your ride home?

My ride is 13 miles...if that's relevant, cos I was only asking about when would most of the sugar be released in my blood or whatever ready to be burned up.

It is relevant to me.My normal commute is ten miles and I don't always feel great and have experienced the "knock" on rare occasions.

when i freelanced in the graphics studio at mbna bank we had "banana time". usually around 11am and entailed mass consumption of bananas (1 each but many people) usually accompanied by some banana related music (a partial playlist can be found on itunes somewhere, search for mbna banana time) and a strange-but-true banana fact.

the practice was later abandoned when we ran out of banana facts (not having internet access there).

if i had a better signature, i'd use that instead

Hack I really doubt you bonked from not eating during 10 odd mile commute. It's more likely to be other factors, illness and head wind etc

Maz if you feel you need it 1 to 2 hours before

Disagree. It's possible depending on the type of commute and work done and food eaten during the day.

about 2 hours before, but you don't really need it, just work at 70-80% of your Max HR and burn fat instead. [:)]

i went for a ride after work on tuesday round regents. before hand i ate steadily and drank plenty.

the wind was fierce, i lapped quickly with a friend, went up highgate and back, did around miles.

on the way home to bow i felt the knock and had to stop for 5 minutes and eat a snickers. i imagine it's becuase of the pace of the ride and the headwind, but it was odd - i regularly ride 60-70 miles on a saturday morning and this doesn't happen. i do eat regularly though during the ride. i guess this is the key difference, it was the combination of the harder pace and the lack of any food during the ride - even though it was short - and the heat, that depleted my energy levels more rapidly.

quite embarassing nonetheless, experiencing the knock on hackney road and being overtaken by all and sundry; that horrible feeling of light-headedness and having nothing to give.

Last time I had the knock I was right outside 'The Volunteer' near Waltham Abbey. Sank three pints in about ten minutes followed by sausage and mash and another pint for afters. Loverly!!

Hack, you body will recover its energy quicker than most people think

If your job was digging holes then Ok work would be a factor. At the end of the day most people "feel" tired, most of which is mental.

A number of people have spoken about knocking but it really should'nt happen unless you've been excerising hard for at least 90 minutes.

This is all asuming that your eating properly and not doing thing like, eating chocolate, drinking beer, drinking large quantities of coffee during the day, or dieting.
