There is also a nice campsite in Allemont - 5k down from Bourg D'Oisans. I stayed in Allemont but not actually in the campsite.

Jibi's right - I stayed at La Piscine and can recommend. Nice lady who runs it too (a bit flirty lol). Nice pool and bar, but got VERY busy the night before the Tour went up the Alpe. If you're climbing the Alpe have a warm up back down the road first, 'cos the start of the climb is only yards away from the campsite! I think it cost about 12 Euros...

Agree with the comments about the camp site based at the foot of Alpe D huez but there is a caveat. When I stayed there last year there was some construction work going on at the top and the noise from the lorries climbing the mountain started early in the morning to late in the evening.0

Also it's true you need to head back down the valley for a warm up.On our first visit to france,we arrived at bourg d'oisans in the evening (after getting the car stuck in a snow drift on the Galibier...don't ask!).we turned left out of our campsite (la Rencontre du soleil),& smack straight into the first ramp of the climb.
Went down well with the wife,NOT!
Enjoy yourself [:D]
