New wheel rebuild?

Is a couple of mm noticeable play from left to right and about a 1mm play up and down within reason for a new wheel build?

Just had my commuter's front rim replaced with a Mavic Open Pro and new dt spokes with brass nipples fitted at a lbs.

BTW, would love to learn how to do this sort of thing myself ;-)

Vertical play can be bad news and often gets worse. It can probably be trued rather than rebuilt.

You can learn a bit about wheels here:

  • It is within the british standard but is not a great build. Most workshops would not let that out the door. Normally less than 0.2mm side to side and about the same vertically

For a 'professional' wheel build I'd say that's unacceptable - any accomplished wheelbuilder should be able to get them within 0.5mm of true and 1mm of vertical - for a skilled wheelbuilder it would only take 10 minutes to get them almost perfect - I'd be inclined to take them back and ask for them to be done properly - looks to me as though you're being fobbed off with a 'rush' job and one that's likely to go even further out of true sooner rather than later.
  • Sounds like a 'Friday' wheel to me. its should be straight at least.

Worthwhile learning how to 'straighten' wheels anyway. really useful skill, the Jobst Brandt book was good for me
