Ideal Sportive Breakfast...
I'm looking for some advice on an ideal breakfast pre-sportive...
I am riding the Dragon Ride & Etape and want to make sure that I am fuelled up with the right mix of slow/quick burn fuel.
The issue is that Sportives have early starts, this means an even earlier breakfast. I will be staying in a travelodge and B&B respectively so need to be able to make this breakfast in my room (i.e. boiling up milk for poridge is out of the question).
So to get the ball rolling, how about...
Where: Hotel Room
When: 2 hrs before start of ride (i.e. 6am before 8am start).
What:
Muesli (Alpen) + Sultanas + Banana + Milk
Muller Rice
Bread + Butter + Jam (strawberry)
OJ
Thanks in advance for any advice.

As I don't drink milk I'll do my usual of 2 Shredded Wheat with fruit and orange juice and a green tea. I'll eat a couple of peanut butter torpedo rolls before the start and maybe a Power Bar if I've got any room.
On the ride I'll take another 2 peanut butter rolls, 4 power bars and enough powder to mix up 6 large bottles of energy drink (energy drink is PHD Battery).0 -
(i.e. boiling up milk for poridge is out of the question).
...you dont need milk to do this...just boil up some water (most rooms have one) and pour it onto the oats...leave for ten mins and it's done.
I did this for a week in Normandy last year.Gravity sucks0 -
I don't really want to rely on having a kettle. Alos for the Etape where I'll be leaving the b&b at 5am - every 10mins counts !!!

Here's what i'll be having for both :
2 hard boiled eggs (cooked at home)
bread and butter
some ham
2 bananas
Alpen with milk
bread butter & strawberry jam.
Pint of OJ mixed 3/2 with water or electrolyte.
Then flapjacks, mini ham sarnies, salted peanuts, dried apricots and gels throughout.
Ready brek is a good alternative to porridge - cooks quicker and can be scarfed down without chewing. (Boil the milk in the kettle! [:D])
Or, if you can face it first thing, cold pasta mixed with a can of tuna in olive/sunflower oil, some Tesco Arrabiata Sauce or similar and chop up a hard boiled egg.0 -
***Shock announcement***
You don't actually have to cook oats to eat them, in fact they are just as delicious with plain cold milk/soya milk. Just don't call it porridge cos that is cooked oats.
Also if you have access to a kettle you can pour on the boiling water and leave for a few minutes then top up with cold milk, they will still be quite hot and cooked.

small milk (no boiling), with muesli and cereal.
bread with jam, fruit cake.
if you can have some food with carbohydrates is the best, but you can use some energy bar and enrgy drink before and during the etape.

Pirahna you must be so 'hard', the very idea of eating shredded wheat with milk terrifies me, but with fruit juice................Huge respect! I wonder if pre-cooked porridge in a wide necked thermos would be an idea?0

FWIW what you eat the days before has more impact on blood glycogen rather than needing to have a big breakfast in the morning - in fact all it will probably mean is that you just need to go to the toilet more. A high-energy shake such as REGO is really good prior to an event as well as simple carbs and fruit - getting yourself into regular snacking will set-up your eating rythmn for the day rather than having a large meal first thing, which tends to divert blood from other parts of the body in order to digest it - you'll also risk an insulin spike and resultant trough.0

Dorset cereal muesli, with milk. Add a banana. Croissant. As early before the start as possible 1hr is good 2 is better.
Energy drink or gel or flapjack just prior to the off.
at least 1 bottle of water and 1 bottle of energy drink every hour, at least 1 energy gel or bar an hour.

A guy in the running club ate three tins of rice pudding, cold, from the tin, before a marathon last year.
His room mate watched, horrified/amused.
why is it sunny all week yet rains at weekends ?0 -

It's been my everyday brekfast for years. Shredded Wheat is the only cereal you'll find in Tesco that doesn't have added sugar. If you leave it for 10 minutes before eating the wheat softens and it's quite nice, it just tastes of fruit juice.0
