I've had my Giant SCR for a year, and done 4000miles on it. I haven't crashed the bike, or mis-treated it.

A crack in the frame has developed just below the seat tube to to top tube weld.

I'm hoping for a result from my lbs/Giant, but if the worst comes to the worst, am I within my rights to demand a replacement frame ? Or am i reliant on lbs/Giant goodwill ?

it looks like to me in the photo that you may not have met the minimum insertion depth for your seatpost, the giant manual specifies that there must be x (i can remember what it is) of seatpost in the frame otherwise you get the sort of crack that you have got, plus its not got a giant seatclamp on it (this shouldnt really mean anything but manufacturers can be funny)

I would go through the correct warranty procedure as spcified by giant and see where you get, i think their warranty is uite good so you should have a reasonable chance, thats if they dont get you on the point above !!

good luck, hope you get sorted

The minimum insertion depth marker on the seatpost is well into the frame, no manual supplied from the lbs, so I'd be a tad upset if they refused me on that.

You say 'about' a year. Do you mean under a year or just over a year? Either way it doesn't look good.

First port of call has to be your LBS because your 'sales contract' is with them, not Giant. See what they say.

SIZE IS EVERYTHING! or at least that's what my LBS tells me.

    Quoted from my Giant manual:

"The frame and rigid fork of your Giant bicycles are guaranteed against material and / or construction defects for 5 years

    [snip]

All warranty claims should be submitted to the Giant dealer from whom the bicycle was purchased."
  • Looks like a crack at the weld, so 'probably' could be a manufacturers defect. Thats what i would expect anyway

still will not counter the fact that giant say it has to be in by x amount (is it the seatpost that came with it ?), because they are compact you can end up with a lot of leverage due to the amount of seatpost out, this is why they specify this

you might be lucky, but if people can wriggle out of warranties they almost certainly will, like everybody has said, go through the correct channels and see what happens, thats got to be your starting point

did you get it through a bona fide giant dealer ?, if you did i would start with them, if not then just give giant UK a call, but if you bought it "grey" then expect a struggle !!

My experiences with Giant warranty claims have been pretty good - used to help out at an LBS and Giant dealer - I don't understand above post on seatpost insertion - the crack is on the toptube and besides, I think the frame has a sleeved insert for the seatpost, so seatpost depth is pretty immaterial - failure of the frame due to incorrect seatpost insertion would normally be on the seatube itself IME. From what you say and by the looks of the photo, I would think you have a pretty reasonable claim.

Good news, Giant are replacing the frame. It's the blue scr 2 frame rather than the red scr 3 frame, so saddle/tires/tape won't match, but hey beggers can't be choosers.

Interested on what Giant recommenend on minimum seat post insertion. I don't have large amounts of seat post showing normally, and as Monty says above the seat post is in a shim.
