    both good bikes.

one has chosen pedigree and is used in the TDF, the other is only available online german manufacturer rated highly by C+.

i'd go for the wilier for the combination of aesthetics, history and class...

Of the two I'd go for the Focus Cayo (and I own a Wilier, albeit the carbon-framed Mortirolo). I don't think the Cayo can be beaten at the price point you're interested in. For your money you'd be getting an extremely well-spec'd carbon framed bike.

Slightly biased response but go for the Wilier-Wilier-Wilier-Wilier-Wilier-Wilier-Wilier-Wilier- LOL[:D][}:)] If your pockets are deep enough go for the Centaur Groupset. When I ride mine I just grin from ear to ear like a mad Cheshire cat.

As previous poster has said the Cayo gets a good right up in the current C+ , but is only available on-line unless you are planning to go to Deutchland to collect in person, so you'll need to know what size you want, but really although the frame on my Wilier was made in a Taiwanese factory, it says Wilier on it,and will have been built to their specific requirements.

OK some people say it looks like a Planet X frame, but the weave pattern is much nicer and so are the frame decals. It also has a very nice Italian groupset and some nice finishing kit by ITM, Selle and FSA. There was a recent rave review in C+ 192 in which they refered to it as a star of the future, read the review and see what you think, it made my mind up for me[8D]

    IMHO there isn't really a choice.[^][:D][;)]

Just go with your heart, get the FCF Mortirolo with the Centaur Gruppo. You wont need to do any upgrades...Well maybe the wheels, but they can wait as the R7's do the job, they just dont look much IMHO!

Don't forget that you can have the Cayo for a week to try and it doesn't float your goat you can pack it back off to Wiggle. I'm in a similar position to yourself but trying to decide between the Focus and Planet X superlight carbon, and having seen 2 in the flesh recently I'm currently veering towards the PX.

i have a max limit of a grand so the 2006 evaison with 105 in team colours just scrapes in there in the sale however have had a look at the planet x and it looks excellent its just tevalue for money against the focus with its part ultegra group set but like i said earlier these things can be upgraded at a later point just cant decide

The OP didn't make mention of the Mortirolo, he was asking about the Evasion.

Wiggle now offer to send the Cayo, allow you to ride it for a week and send it back if you're unhappy with it.....the OP should be able to figure out his approx. sizing and get a Cayo sent to him to try out.

don't be worried about combinations of materials or not having carbon - there's a current trend towards "carbon or nothing" which is a bit spurious when you consider what most of us use our bicycles for.

  • FWIW the wiggle service when ordering is very good, they will help size it and if its the wrong size they will collect and replace it. Keep the box though! If you can live without the "badge" then the cayo is hard to beat: the frame is well worthy of some serious wheels. It all comes down to whether you'd buy an Audi over a VW, both do the job equally well, but only one will (possibly) make your neighbours envious [:)]

i know youre right both will do the same jobbut have differt bling factors
wilier its the name and history
    focus its the carbon fibre

must admit i am more drawn to the wilier at present however have emailed focus to check some things such as sizing and warranty

so far i am not that bothered about the weight saving of carbon fibre as losing a few stones will probably give me more benefit at the moment

don't worry about weight; with carbon fibre it's about the ride.

but you are right - any savings should be undertaken around the middle before you start drilling the seatpost.

Don't be silly, for under a grand you want to get as much for your money as you can, that means the carbon frame, Mavic Aksiums and Ultegra groupset. When you have four or five times that to spend you can worry about what graphics/labels you want on it.

I have a Focus (Alu Variado Expert) and a Wilier (Carbon 2007 Wilier Centaur) so kind of the reverse of what you are looking atin terms of material! I love both bikes, but the Wilier is just a joy to ride. On balance I'd go for the Wilier; for me their heritage just shades it and although Alu it's not much heavier than the Focus. I saw my first ever 07 Cayo the other day and I have to say I really don't like the look of it although I hear it's a great bike.

I'm assuming you are looking at the Wilier advertised on the Cyclesurgery website. If so it's worth noting that they offer interest free credit. If I was you I'd take the interest free credit option and go for a Wilier Mortirolo instead; as Flint and Academic have noted, and I can attest to, the Mortirolo is fantastic. http://www.wilierbikes.co.uk/wilier/wp.php?wpc=3

cant afford to stretch to teh carbon wilier but seem to be getting a good discount with approx œ400 quid off the evaison and its only 1.5 lbs heavier than the similar speced focus also just had a look at teh planet x the frame seems a bit better built than the focus is this also worth a good look at ?
  • i would go for a planet x or a pbk both full carbon and customer service is great folloewing up your purchase.
i like the look of the pbk myself

I think we should just have a single 'What racing bike for œ1000?' sticky thread here, because it seems to be the same comments every time... wouldn't that be more useful?

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety

Cayo is presently at the top of my birthday list!

I think this choice (should) ultimately be determined by what you actually want the bike for and which does the job better. By the mere fact that the Wilier is being considered in Team colours, I'd guess that you want something that you'll go "Ah!" and get a warm feeling every time you look at it. Sounds like the winner then.

If I'm wrong and you want the best bike your money can buy, I can't see how you can go wrong with the Focus.

i amlooking for the best bike for the money and my limited ability the only reason the wilier evaision in team colours is there is because it is now reduced to under a grand and fits the bill for what i am looking for if it was over a grand then it wouldnt even be considered must admit ido want a little bit of the "bling factor"but both bikes offer this in spades in differing areas alli am looking for is what would be best as i will struggle to test either of them prior to purchase as both are internet deals
just with being new to the road scence was looking for some help

To be honest unless you are under 65Kgs and an elite rider then the weight difference is completely irrelevant. Its the way the bike responds to climbing and accelerating, and how comfortable it is. A carbopn frame is much better at absorbing high frequency road noise than an ally or steel frame, so you get less vibration. Its much more comfortable on longer rides. As for bling, well thats a personal thing, no point asking for other peoples advice on that subject unless you want to be a sheep [;)]
