I'm sure I've got a dvd of a late 80's TdF showing the pros walking up a hill - combination of high gears on a predominately flat stage with a small kick, and a logjam of riders when the peloton reached it.

If you are cycling slower than you can walk - get off and walk!

  • Sure it was congested - but what great fun! I was visiting from Jo'burg, and enjoyed it immensely. Made it up the Beacon without walking, but felt it! Remember folks - 90% of thos cycling there were real cyclists, not obsessive-compulsive competitors. The spirit was great, and so was the beer!

Well said Marius, that's how I feel about it too. It's just riding fun, not a race, and I was out for a day of enjoyment and social.

It's not so bad if you start with the first or second bunch. The first 5-10 miles are a bit busy. The last time I did this the road was practically empty about 10 miles from Brighton. I was worried I had missed a turn!
