To confuse you even further:
Large front to large rear + 1 link
I think that's the best one - though it doesn't seriously matter what method you use as long as the chain is long enough for large-large.

campag said small small and make sure the chain has 10mm clearance where it passes itself under the rear mech0

Large to large (not through mech) plus one link works for me0

parctools.com repair page has several methods, rules of thumb and calculations that all work well.0

I normally use that method with the chain as long as possible in small as well, providing mechs are compatible capacity wise then that will be OK on large-large as well.
As ~Pete cortectly stated <font color="red">"it doesn't seriously matter what method you use as long as the chain is long enough for large-large";</font id="red"> if to long the mech will not be able to take up the tension should you mis shift into small-small, the chain will then rub on the bottom part mech which will simply altert you to the mishift in the unlikely event that you hadn't realised already.

Yep, another vote here for the large to large + 1 link method. Always spot on.0

that's good, but also, count the links on the previous chain OR look up in my book to see what I used last time

Same length as the chain you took off!
