Wheel rubs on one side!

This may have a very simple answer, but I haven't got a clue.

When I get out of the saddle and push down hard on the left hand pedal, the rear wheel rubs on one of the brake pads, and makes an annoying noise.

I have tried re-setting it in the drop outs and tightening up the QR.

I wondered if it could be the brakes need aligning, but I don't know how to do that.

Any ideas?
Cheers

  • It 'sounds' like the wheel flexing, if it happens only when you are honking out of the saddle then its not too bad. If its happening when cornering, then its really bad.

What kind of wheel is it?

  • I've just upgraded the Bontrager Select wheels to Bontrager Race Lite's.
It has done it on both sets.

Try flexing the wheel side-to-side in the frame - if you can move it across and it hits the brake blocks, then the spoke tension is probably too slack. I'm assuming the brake caliper is centred too i.e. it doesn't rub normally. Grip pairs of spokes in the rear wheel and see how much they move - if the spokes move more than a couple of mm, then is definitely sounds like slack spokes - suggest you take the wheel to your LBS and have it looked at.
