What does compact mean

Hi guys i am new to cycling, have heard people discussing the topic of using a compact gearing setup or not.

Could somebody enlighten me what is a compact setup?

    the chainrings (at the crank) were for a long time 52 tooth and 42 tooth or 53t and 39t.

    compact refers to smaller chainring combination such as 50tooth and 34 tooth.

    foe everyday riding or riding in hilly areas it makes a lot of sense

  • thanks for the reply my bike has cassette sproket 12-26 and chainring 36/60 is that a compact.

    you mean a 50 i hope, 60 on the front and the 12 tooth at the back would be a huge gear!!

    yes, your gearing is "compact".

    Chainring size is not the definitie definition of a compact crank. What really defines it is the 110mm BCD.
