Cant decide which bike!

I think a hybrid is right for me but I can't decide which bike to get. I've been looking at a Specialised Sirrus or a Globe and have I've got a budget of about œ400.

I really like the Sirrus (just the base model) and although my usage will mainly be on the road (fitness/recreational and a little commuting) I want to be able to ride on towpaths etc hence looking at the Globe. Could I put wider tyres/wheels on the Sirrus for towpath use etc without any adverse effects?

Any views gratefully received (or even other bike suggestions).

Thanks

The Sirrus has 28mm tyres. I find 28mm tyres perfectly adequate for towpaths as long as you keep them properly inflated. Buy a decent track pump for œ20 or so and you'll be OK.

Ive used my Sirrus on Tow paths a few times and apart from getting a little dirty it copes fine.

If I had a baby elephant, who would take it for walks?

I would go for the Sirrus as it's faster and will allow you to be more ambitious as you get fitter.

You could also consider similar fast hybrids like the Genesis Day 00 or Dawes Discovery that get mentioned on this forum sometimes.

    Another vote for the Sirrus.

Extremely happy with mine after four months.

..and another vote for the Sirrus.

Tried both out at my LBS and whilst the Globe Sport was nice, it just didn't have that same feeling of connection and speed that the Sirrus did. The Sirrus for me just felt right!

In the end I went for the next model up, the Elite, but the LBS provided a hefty discount on the accessories which brought the price down to what I was budgeting.

If going for the base model I would *strongly* recommend changing the tyres for puncture proof ones, and personally the suspension seat post was a no-no for me.

One word of warning, there is not much room for mudguards on the Sirrus, so you may struggle to put a wider tyre on it if mudguards are a must!

Finally check your LBS can get hold of the Sirrus in your size before you get your hopes up too high. Specialized are running out on some of the Sirrus range in common sizes.

  • Yet another vote for the sirrus - I have a 2007 comp model, so a couple up from the base model but 4 months on and I still love riding it.

Have fitted SRS Raceblades and also a rear rack as I use mine for weekend rides, and commuting. Other additions have been bar ends, and clipless pedals - think that's it!

Mostly ridden on roads, but have had to done a few sections of tow path/gravel paths and it has coped OK.

  • Have a look at the Scott Sub 20, they tyres are fine for tow paths, good all round bike really.
  • Thanks everyone. I was worriefd the sirrus was an out and out road bike but what do I know.

Off to source one now and perhaps see if I can my stretch my budget a bit. Oops here comes the wife!
