Always keep yourself between the bike and the road, you wouldn't want the bike to have a hard landing.[:)]

On the serious side, this tends to be my natural reaction (protect the bike!), and as a result I tend to land with shoulder tucked in and with my back taking most of the fall. Despite being clumsy as hell I've only ever had grazes as a result.0 -
I've concluded it comes down to luck. Usually it happens so fast you don't have time to "think" but subconciously it probably helps to relax.
I took two falls at Chertsey in Cat 4 races, both times caused by riders in front touching wheels and coming down right in front of me, so had nowhere to go but over the top.
At 30mph I landed well and got away with a bruised finger and a small scrape on the elbow. In the second one, a month later, at 25mph I wasn't so lucky and gashed hip, back elbow and shoulder. I must have landed on my arm too because I fractured my radial head in my elbow and separated my shoulder. I'll be off for several months.
Both times it was on the final lap, lap 13, so maybe the best advice for avoiding crashes is ride in front of the pack on the final lap.0 -
Always let the bike have its own accident. I swear the b**gers are heat-seeking...
Martial arts training definitely helps, too.0
