Co2 cartridges

What kind of racing ? If its road racing then I'd not bother - you'll be out of the back of the bunch if you have to fix it. Wheel change would be better if available.
Mike Dyason does one that has cartridges and can be used as a hand pump if you are out of gas.0 -

Not quite sure what you mean by economise. The cartridges are not cheap. I use the simple cartridge screw into the head. Unscrew the cartridge to release CO2 into tyre, tighten to stop. Simple but effective, just remember not to hold the unit with bare fingers, it gets damn cold.
I use the cartridges simply because I have yet to find a pump which quickly and efficiently inflates to 100 - 120 psi. I still carry a pump in case I have much punctures than cartridges carried (generally 2).

I have a barbieri inflator with built in pump - two p**ctures yesterday and it worked a treat. It will be good for triathlons if I ever need it. The pump allows you to put about 30PSI in, then whack it up to 120 with the CO2. I disagree about the basic models as I find it virtually impossible to control the flow.
