Do I need a cassette spacer?

I've got a set of Bontrager Race Lite wheels fitted with 105.

The cassette keeps coming loose and rattling, no matter how much I tighten up the lockring. Do I need a spacer (there is already a VERY thin one between the smallest sprocket and the lockring)?

If so, where can I get one from? The LBS says they are like hens teeth...

It's ALL about the bike.

is it 10 speed? if so the very thin one is a 10 speed spacer that comes with the cassette. i don't know about bonty wheels, but with mavic you need a spacer - which comes with the wheels. have you checked with wherever you got the wheels?

If they are anything like mavic hubs, then you'll need a spacer of about 1mm before you fit the cassette - My mavic wheels didn't come with the spacer (must have got lost together with the manual) but I fortunately had an ancient spacer from the early days of freehubs, and managed to dig that out.

I'm assuming this spacer mallarky is because of extended compatability as I was fitting an 8 speed dura-ace cassette to my new wheels.

    I'd try someone like Parker
  • I think that the spacer behind the cassette is the solution as the 10th sprocket (12T) won't actually go onto the freeehub far enough to make contact with all the other sprockets.

    It's ALL about the bike.

For what it's worth, the plain ciruclar spacers that were used with screw-on freewheels fit and work fine for this job. You just need to find one that's the right thickness. Try some more LBSs till you find one that's got a few knocking about in a tin of old bits.

I've got one knocking about in a tin of old bits if you're desperate!
