Upgrade Shimano Tiagra > 105 ???
I've ordered some new wheels (Fulcrum 3's) - which are to be for High days & Holidays - and was thinking about getting a new cassette and chain to go on these wheels.
I currently run a Tiagra 9 speed groupset.
Would a shimano 105 [url=http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/details.asp?D=P&Cat=CASSETTES&Section=CASS&GenCode=SHIMCASS0900
]cassette (HG70) and [url=http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/details.asp?D=P&Cat=CHAINS&Section=CHAI&GenCode=SHIMCHAI0750
]chain (HG73) be compatible with my Tiagra chainset.
Or should I stick with a Tiagra [url=http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/details.asp?D=P&Cat=CASSETTES&Section=CASS&GenCode=SHIMCASS1000
]cassette (HG50) and [url=http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/details.asp?D=P&Cat=CHAINS&Section=CHAI&GenCode=SHIMCHAI0700
]chain (HG53)?
If it is compatible, what differences would I notice? It's a little lighter, would it be any smoother?
Many thanks,
Rich

I can't see why these two would not be compatible. Usually the issue only occurs when 9 and 10 speed things get mixed up.
To be honest with you I am not sure that you will notice much difference. The only difference will be weight (which will only be a couple of grams). I am pretty sure the smoothness is determined by the type of shifters you have. If you wanted it to be smoother then you would probably have to upgrade the shifters to 105 or higher.

On the price front for cassette & chain it is as follows:
œ19.70 for Tiagra.
œ32.90 for 105.
Worth the extra œ13.20 ???

Put it this way, if it were me I wouldn't bother. I would keep my œ13.200

Thanks denzil. Think I might just save that 13 quid then.
