Great the Dauphine comes on early, then duffield starts his antics of saying sorry to all of you tennis fans out there...after the tennis commentator telling tennis fans to turn over to Eurosport 2.......God almighty how many times is he going to mention saying sorry.....The Tennis Guys NEVER say sorry to us Cycling fans when there sport over runs into ours do they....then he starts babbling on about going out to do the messages....Mow the Lawn....shoot your Dog etc etc...all Blah Blah Blah.......for god sake tell us whats been happening in the race before they came on air....yes david we actually like Cycling stories ..were not interested in Bloody tennis or there fans..

Hmmm, yes. Poor old Duffers got a bit of a pasting the other day on the forum, though, so I won't twist the knife.
However, after the aforementioned pasting he did seem to do much better on the Ventoux stage of the Dauphine (maybe he reads the forum?!) - until that is he completely missed Moreau's final stage-winning attack because he was wibbling on about something.
Bless him.

Re all the bashing he's taken on here (inc from me!) . . . . surely these two points are mutually exclusive?
1) The fact that he's a nice enough old man whom you wouldn't mind bumping into on the street for a natter. Who clearly has a passion for the sport etc etc
2) The need for a professional, clear speaking, knowledgable commentator to make our cycle watching experience pleasurable.0 -
He's plumbed new depths today - AG2R launch a surprise attack and it's taken him 5 minutes to notice!0

Until the Col de Telegraphe, we'd only hear Duffield rambling away by some random piece of cycling history we've already heard enough times about, or a very detailed description of what happens in the peloton if a race leader has a puncture.
We really don't need this sort of rambling during a race. Ok, so there wasn't a great deal going on during the stage, but it would at least be better to keep us informed of what happened earlier in the stage before broadcast, or perhaps a bit more about the riders in the breaks for example. Why on earth did he single out Valjavec from Lampre for special attention? Surely, to talk about young riders in the break, such as Di Gregorio, would've been more relevant and interesting for the viewer?
His great big ramble about a rider puncturing on the top of the Mollard was really embarrassing. There we see Kaschechkin making his way back down to the peloton and it's as if it triggered something in Duffield's brain to then give us a long description of what happens when the leader punctures! He could've just said that he must've had a puncture and was making his way back to the peloton with the help of his teammates and that's it! Did he seriously think tennis fans were still tuned in to justify him giving us these great big monologues? Imagine if a tennis commentator decided to give us a detailed explanation of of the rules behind a tie-break while one was going on. It just wouldn't be on would it!?
Rant over.

"You can sympathise with Duffield. . the Dufferino comes from a generation that believes in value for money, so he just keeps on commentating... "
Martin Kelner's article in todays Guardian is good for a laugh:
