Which wheelset around œ200

I want a new pair of wheels for more serious riding. The emphasis is on a back wheel that won't flex on climbs and other than that - weight and reasonable life span.

I've considered:

Fulcrum 5's
Shimano Ultegra
Handbuilt mavic on ultegra

Any advice?

Would it be worth keeping my mediocre front wheel and spending my whole budget on the best rear wheel I can afford?

What about Zondas? 06 and 07 model are virtually the same so you might pick up cheap 06s for 200 quid

or Kore do a wheelset for 165-170 quid (1580 gr pair)

A set of Fulcrum 5's should set you back only about œ130
  • I've been looking at Easton Vista SL's at around œ180....but pretty sure they are no where near as light as the Kore wheels mentioned above. I've not heard o this brand before - amy good?

Does anyone have experience of any of these wheels and how they compare for strength/stiffness and durability as well as weight.

Really what we need is a mag review of the options at this price point - any one know of one?

Mavic Aksiums, again only about œ130 and a good solid reliable wheel.

Handbuilts on the ultegra hub with open pro rims.

  • I've got a set of Easton Circuits which have never been used for sale for œ200 (Am I allowed to say that on this forum, if I've broken a rule let me know and it won't happen again). For an extra œ30 I'll throw in the Swalbe Stelvio tyres (silver/black) and tubes.

I'm running Ventos, which are similar to Fulcrums, although Ventos don't have bladed spokes.

I recently bought Open Pro. ceramic 32Hs with Ultegra hubs and straight gauge 3x rear/ radial front spokes with brass nipples - Superb wheel.
Really solid, really comfortable. Loads more confidence descending.
Marginally lighter - approx. 50g in it - but if you went for DB spokes and ally nipples you could probably to better.

The Ventos are nice, just not as nice.
The hubs seem freer running on the Ventos.

Poss. better braking surfaces on the Open Pros, however difficult to tell as I run the Mavics with 105 and the Ventos with Tektro deep drop calipers and Swissstops.

Harry Rowland was a good person to talk to, as were Dauphin Cycles in Box Hill, however in the end I got Condor to build mine.

    Thanks all.

JW, I must say I've been leaning towards open pros on ultegra. Any idea what they wheigh?

I was out of the saddle up white lane this morning and I could feel the Reynolds Alta Comps flexing - they are nice and light but too flexy for me.

  • Last year I bought a set of Ambrosio hubs and rims from Harry Rowland for œ220 excl œ10 delivery. Great wheels and nice and different if that appeals. Just bought a set of Ambrosio rims and Dura Ace hubs from Harry for œ300 (I collected them this time) to replace a set of crap Alra Comp that came with my Planet X. The new wheels got me through the Ride of the Cotswolds today with no worries at all. Both wheels with Sapim Laser spokes. I'd suggest you give Harry a call as he will give you time and advice and not a hard sell (he even helped me with my bar height!). He is very clear as to what he will supply and won't. His number is 01843 597 443.

Harry wolper - thanks, I'll give him a ring.

yenrod - I'll settle for stiff and light.

Boon - they are equipes not elites. Parker do them for œ199.

Hey Currie - How's it going?
You off to do the continent soon?
I bumped in to Naz doing the Box Hill challenge on Saturday afternoon. Like the article on your website - was that your Mrs. at Highclere?
(Who was the guy up Box Hill on the fab. looking Rapha Condor "team" bike in full Rapha gear)?

I weighed the wheels complete with tyres/tubes/skewers/tape/cassettes, so my figures are a little skewed (excuse the pun). They're all from Condor, so we can reasonably assume the tubes are all the same, and I have manufac. weights for the tyres, so will back-calculate this evening.

The figure 1740g all-up, per wheel springs to mind - will dig them out this evening.

1740g for the set would be absolutely great - I thought they'd end up being heavier than that.

OK, I seem to have "been tidied" since I wrote the figures down [:(!]
    Found the front wheel figures:
    The Mavic front 32H straight/radial laced with a GP4000S 23c is: 1250g
    The Campag. Vento with a GP4000 25c is: 1274g

    GP4000 25c listed weight is 215g
    GP4000 S 23c listed weight is 205g

Not sure on tube weights, though suspect they're Specialized with long valves.

The Shimano Ultegra hubs are the cheapest in the range that are listed as radial lace compatible. 105/Ultegra/DA hubs are servicable, however you will as a result need a cone spanner.

Campag. Vento hubs are not servicable, however they do run freer under zero load. I guess it's the same for Fulcrums.

I prefer the feel of the Ultegra skewers - they feel more positive and solid.

Suspect the Mavic will feel easier to spin, as it's a traditional section, whereas the Vento is a mid-section "aero" as per the Fulcrum.

Will go bin-diving for the rear wheel figures, though they were pretty similar.

Currie - what happened to your foot?
