I got one of these yesterday- my very first real road bike- and took it out for a whole 40 miles. It's an absolute beauty. It's like Christmas day! Except my shoes didn't arrive so had to push clipless pedals with footie trainers but it worked ok. Anyway it's fantastic! Amazing. And SO quick. I just thought I'd tell you. But I have really sore elbows after reaching on the hoods all evening. Is this normal?

• Are you stretching to get to the hoods? Your elbows should be slightly bent (like when you drive a car), and it should feel comfortable. Play with the bike until you get it to feel right - you can move the saddle back/forwards, or adjust the angle of the drops - these things might make it feel better. Or, it may be simply that you aren't used to them yet. I got a giant scr 2 a couple of months ago, and it's superb - never feels like a chore getting out on the bike (although sometimes the hills do).

I have a bike; she's called Fran. I enjoy her company.

Have ordered a SCR 4.0 today. Great bikes. Dont have to reach for the hoods though?? How tall are you and what frame size you get

It's a large which is about right for me at about 6', I think maybe it's just the experience of not having locked out elbows as I often used to have riding the flat bars, and also the arms are generally rotated 90 degrees to previously which might be a shock to them. I better warn my arms that's the way things gonna be from now on. I've just fiddles about with the bars and saddle thanks Sam so I'll see how that gets on. I can't wait to get out on it again!

I'm about the same height as you and have a large SCR 2.0 and find also it's a slight stretch to the hood ends. The flat bit of the hoods and the drops are fine though and those are my favourite hand positions anyway unless I'm climbing in which case the handlebars magically seem to draw in a bit closer.

I'm sure you'll get more comfortable as you get used to a road bike position. 40 miles is an outstanding effort for a first ride without proper shoes. Well done!

Hopefully your thread won't attract the sanctimonious "You DID buy from your LBS didn't you?" crew. They usually arrive en masse when anyone talks about sizing and kit "not arriving". Let's hope not this time...

Thanks- I did in fact buy from Edinburgh cycles round the corner and tried the bike first although the shoes were not local. I got em now though so looking forward to tomorrow's ride to work! Cheers all

Hi guys.

Just saw your forum. Im not the only one who has to really reach for the hoods on the scr's! I am 5'6 and thre 50cm seems too long. I am thinking about ordering the womens specific but I am in a dilema as to which bike to choose! I have a MAx budget of 1000euro and I am looking at the scr 4.0 / scr 3.0 / scr ltd womens. The scr 3.0 seems to have some of the best spec - the gears have a wider spread and I really need to have a granny gear for climbing. Is it not worth my while looking at the scr 4.0 or ltd because they only have two chainwheels??

I have the same thing with my scr 2.0 it feels like i am overstretching to reach the hoods, yet the drops are fine. I will be trying a shorter stem to see if that works. Oh i am 5.7 and the bike is 50cm.

Mad thing have you checked out www.winstanleysbikes.com the SCR's are on sale there got a scr 1.0 coming for œ600! Should be well within your budget? no idea about european postage rates but looks like theres a few places around selling off the giant scr's at bargain prices. Best to make sure they have what you want in stock not just available to order as it looks like giant have discontinued the 2007 range already.

Im 5'8" and found the 50cm frame spot on, might be worth looking at the giant-cycles home page and see how the top tube length changes with different frame sizes?

madthing I bought a SCR 2.0 (for my son) from http://cyclestore.co.uk for œ383.[:)]
The SCR 2.0 is a triple like the SCR 3.0 but its Tiagra kit is better that the Sora stuff on the SCR 3.0. It isn't a womens model but the 46.5 cm size should fit up to 5ft 7in and at that price there is enough money left for customising some bits.

Just looking at the Giant site and they recommend the 44cm SCR frame for 5'4" to 5'7" that might be your problem with the bike? Because the SCR frame is a compact you cant use your "normal" frame size to buy a SCR. I would take about a 54cm ona normal bike but the 50cm is just right on the SCR.

the SCR 4 has a double as its a compact chainset with a 26 cassette. i currently ride a 39/25 so it should be easier again.

I'm looking at SCR's but would like to try one - is anyone local to Surrey willing to let me have a go on theirs?!

• I have a scr3 fitted with Sora brake levers which I find as good as the 105's on my better bike (Genesis day 07). Giant bikes give good value, even the cheaper ranges.
