NEVER use starnut in carbon steerer.Must be expander bolt.
  • Good job I asked then[:D][:D][:D]
  • i've just had a star nut pull out of the stearer tube; the inside of the tube had been oiled!!!!

dried everything off and put it back in and then over tightened and bent one of the blades back!!!

would i be better with a plug rather than the star nut, it is a metal stearer

    Thanks

You can use either on a metal steerer. If one of the blades was able to be bent back it may be that the wrong size has been used. Also, it sounds like you may be tightening it up too much if you are doing this and overtightening the headset.

You only need to do it up tight enough to remove play in the bearing.

Also, for those who are weight weenies, the star nut assembly is lighter than the expander and should be able to grip to an alloy steerer very successfully.

As the last post says, be very careful not to do up too tight, just do enough so that there is no play in the headset. Suggest putting front brake on and rock bike back and forth. If there is any movement on the steerer, then it needs tightening a little more. Also suggest tightening cap bolt only 1/8th of a turn at a time.
