derailleur cable change issues

hey guys

I put new cables on the front derailleur yesterday and when i'd finished, shifting the thing took a lot of effort and the cable pulled really tight, so tight you could twang it

they re SRAM X.7 with an X-gen derailleur, bout 18 months old

It has slackend slightly i think, but its still pulled completly taught, unlike the rear derailleur.

I don't think there's any problem with the derailleur itself, but i did have to open the shifters cos for the life of me i couldn't get the cable through without, Put it back together and when the cable is loose, the shifter works fine,

also the little rubber bung on the non driveside arm of the the derailleur has come out?!

Any ideas, it shifts fine but i can't believe its supposed to be this tight?!

Slacken it off slightly, you might have just pulled it too vigorously when fastening it up.

  • well tried that, if anything when the cable is loosest (smallest chainring) its too loose?!

its when you push the shifter that it tightens, like its not moving enough, but it does [:S]

Did you have the shifter selecting the smallest cog when you changed it?

Undo cable pinch bolt, make sure shifter in smallest gear, pull cable tight and do up pinch bolt. beyond that not really sure? I assume all the cable outers are located in their holes properly? cable nipple correctly situated?
