hi there hoping someone can help me ,
I am building a high spec road training bike and it is the first time i have built a bike on my own.for years i have used shimano sti shifters but have never really been all that keen on the brake lever moving in about 5 directions ,however i do like the smoothness of shimano's front and rear mechs.
after sampling a bike with Campag ergopower shifters i was wondering if anyone can tell me could you use a set of ergo power shifters with a shimano front and rear mech......are they compatible?[:I]

  • Not really.

Rear mechs are not compatable ane the front I've never tried. Get the whole groupset from a PRO shop and ask them for setting up advice
Racing is life - everything else is just waiting
  • Yes; as long as you use 10-speed Campag Ergos with a Shimano rear mech and 8-speed cassette. It just happens that the levers pull exactly the right amount of cable for the rear mech and cassette.

Other combinations will work less satisfactorily, if at all.

See the very useful compatibility table here: http://www.wheelworks.co.nz/drivetrain.php

Campag 10-speed ergos work flawlessly with either Shimano 8 or with a really simple cable routing change with Shimano 9-speed rear mech and cassette...
see here for explanation of Shimergo...

But Campag mechs are not really any less smooth - The Shimergo mix and match is fine if you already have the Shimano kit and prefer Ergos to STIs or need mountain bike gears on the back. Can't see the point otherwise.

Mix Shimano and Campagnolo to your hearts content with this...

Just go to campag, you know it makes sense!!

OK, not a sensible answer I know, but a full campag set up has good shifting, OK, maybe not silky smooth like shimano, but it works - extremely well.

I would suggest trying the cable rerouting method first as it is free and if this doesn't work getting a shiftmate. I have a shiftmate on my TT bike as Campagnolo never made 9sp bar end shifters for post 2001 groupsets. It works flawlessly.

Welcome to the 'dark' side - all that lovely carbon and titanium lovingly handcrafted by maidens in Vincenza....rather than mass-produced in a soul-less fishing reel factory in Kobe.
