Hi all,

Last week I ran and cycle the 3 Peaks, using a car is 'cheating'

Briefly;
6 days - 540 miles cycling and running the over 3 Peaks was hard, but enjoyable.
After the initial rain, wind and cloud over Snowdon the weather improved and most of the time was sunny but not too warm.
Early starts and long days, averaging 11 hours from morning to evening each day for 6 days.
No mechanical problems.
I was accompanied on some running and cycling sections by various friends.
Some friends provided support through accommodation and food.

For a fuller report, and after the weekend some photos, www.colinwatts.co.uk/running/3peaks.htm.

In my training for this, having only got a road bike in January, I once cycled > 100 miles in a day. Most of my rides were to work and back, upto 70 mile round trip.
This demonstrates to me that with limited experience on a road bike and only a short training period (5 months) it is possible to do far more than you initially think possible.

  • totally agree about the cheating bit

    Well done.

    Reading this brings back memories

I did it for Rag Week at uni

    77 hours and 10 mins ( 3 days 5 hours 10 mins) in February 1987.

1st day from sea level at Fort William , up Ben Nevis, then to Abington, slept in van for a couple of hours.
2nd day to Lakes and up Sca Fell then on to Preston
3rd day Preston to Snowdon and on to sea level

  • I couldn't agree more about the 'Anything is possible'

4 years ago I was in a hospital bed in casualty/intensive care with severe head injury, multiple fractures (pelvis, vertebae, wrist, etc) and ruptured spleen, and could not even ride a bike for 6-8 months, so when people complain about their 'obstacles' most them are not insurmountable, in my opinion.

I was not trying to achieve a fast time or anything, just to get to finish in good style, which I did.
I know of a couple of others who have done it in ust under 3.5 days this year, so it seems that there are other people around who do it 'properly'!

  • Brilliant effort.

I can't get your report, the link doesn't work Colin

Maybe we could make it an "official" ride like the LEJOG or C2C

What a good post from you - makes my feable excuses to stay in when it rains seem even worse.

I cannot imagine the 3 Peaks but you did it after a bad accident.

    WELL DONE

btw The Cranes are well known as a pair of loonies - who else can reach out and grab a copy of their book "Bicycles up Kilimanjaro" ? Who would not question their sanity after reading the book?
  • Thanks for the link Colin, read it now.

    Remember next time

It's ice in your drink not drinking in the ice [;)]

    As Duffers would say

    CHAPEAUX!!!!!

    and as I would say.

Well done: again, what a good read.

  • Sounds like you had a good trip and obviously enjoyed it.

We did something similar last August only doing the second highest peaks, Carnedd Llewellyn, Scafell and Ben Macdui just to be different. We took a leisurely 6.5 days and only had one morning and one afternoon of rain.

Not sure what the next one will be...maybe furthest north and south munros?
