Jump in mileage, L2B

I currently commute a round trip of 37 miles, three times a week. The longest single journey I've done is 46 miles.

I'm doing the London to Brighton tommorow, and am confident that I can do the distance without too much difficulty. My question is, am I being too ambitious thinking that I can cycle from Pinner to the start at Clapham, This would add about 20 miles to the day, bringing the total to 75 miles, approx. Good challenge, or foolhardy?

    I think you'll be fine.
Have a hearty brekkie, gently pace yourself over the ride to Clapham and then the other 28,000 people will keep you going to the end. Just keep eating and drinking.
There are plenty rest stops on the route, so take it easy am sure you'll be fine.
    Enjoy!

I agree with Fab Foodie. While its a significant jump in extra mileage, if you take the cycle to the start nice and easy it will serve as a good warm up. The thrill and adrenalin of riding with so many others during the ride itself will help it seem much shorter than a solo ride of that distance. (But remember to save something for the Beacon!)

I wouldn't say the jump is particularly significant from a fitness point of view. your success depends more on pacing and nutrition, get that right and you'll have a great day out and still be feeling full of beans when you get home.

Don't worry too much about Ditchling Beacon, it's not that bad. It's just the people in the way in front of you that will force you to stop and walk, depending on what time you're leaving.

Just pace yourself and make sure you eat and drink during the ride, and ENJOY!

SIZE IS EVERYTHING! or at least that's what my LBS tells me.

Are doing the L2B tomorrow?? Saturday??

I am doing it on Sunday, along with the other 30 odd thousand. I am also starting from Pinner but plan to take the Met line to Baker street and cycle from there (about 6 miles).

Enjoy the ride however you approach it.

An update, and a thank you to everyone that encouraged me.

Set off from Pinner at 6, and arrived in Brighton at 1. Not a particularly quick pace, but a total distance of 74.44miles. I remember cycling 10 miles on Christmas day, and really feeling that I'd achieved something, so you can imagine how pleased I am to do 75 miles, 6 months later. Thanks to everyone that gave me hope that it was doable, it was appreciated.

  • Hi Mr Onions.. I too am a Pinnerite and have only recently upped my game from a mere 4 mile commute started back in September with the occasional 10/11 mile pleasure trip to 20 then 32 and a couple of weeks ago a 40.5 mile trip (the 0.5 is very important so I had to add it!) in the New Forest (what a fantastic afternoon that was)
Had fancied the London to Brighton myself next year but having read some of the other Beginners tales this time round I think I'll probably not bother. Did you enjoy it or did you find it too crowded? (I love cycling with others but having just converted to clipless pedals I am not too confident about cycling close to anyone who may suddenly stop without warning!)
I do a regular(ish) and very pleasant round trip of about 20 miles from Pinner (Eastcote side) through Ruislip and Harefield via Breakspear and past Bayhurst Woods country park down to the Grand Union canal at the Coy Carp pub (once The Fisheries) and along the canal to Stocker's Lock and then back up to Harefield via The Rose and Crown pub (just a landmark you understand!! - most of the time) It's really pleasant and easy to forget you're on the edge of Greater London especially when the Kingfisher plops into the canal for a snack of unsuspecting fish! If you haven't done it I highly recommend it. There's a lovely little coffee/snack shop open from Wed to Sunday in the Aquadrome just past Stockers for a welcome stop too. In the meantime I shall look out for other cyclists in Pinner and wonder if it's you or "Onurbike" or any of the other mystery forum contributors zipping past me as I pedal around the lanes of our very pleasant little corner of West London.

p.s have just checked my post and noticed that the time looks a bit odd... No, I'm not a complete bike nerd (as my husband tells me) waking in the early hours to get a quick 'forum fix'... but am trying to keep my eyes open during a rather loooong night duty. Sleep well you lucky, lucky ppl!!
