Shimao compact problem
Hi all
Bought a Massi bike with 105 (10 speed) STI, mechs, 10 speed 12-27 cassette and tiagra (4550) 50-34 tooth compact chainset from LBS.
Problem is when changing to small, 34t, ring the chain doesn't always engage in the teeth but rather the left edge of the chain sits on top of the teeth and I just spin! I have to change back up, try again, all the time losing momentum and patience.
Been back at LBS twice, who have tried all the adjustments they can on front mech, tried a new small chainring, put a spacer in at the BB... all to no avail.
Any suggestions apart from getting a new bike, staying in the big ring, staying in the wee ring?
Many thanks
Kenny

This is an adjustment problem - disconnect the cable with the chain on small ring and inner cassette ring. Then adjust the limit screw so it's set right. Then reattach the cable making sure there is tension but not pulled tight. Put the rear onto the outside cog. Pull the front cable by hand and put the chain onto the big ring. Then while holding the cable adjust the limit screw for the out side limit.
This should then work.
or find a LBS that knows what they are doing.

Thanks Hevipedal, I'll suggest that to LBS, taking the bike back tomorrow.
Another thought, could there be a compatibility problem with the 10 speed 105 bits and the tiagra chainset which is described in C+193 as 9 speed?0 -
The compact chainset should be 10 speed compatible. I have one and it wokrs fine with my Ultegra 10 speed setup.
My mate had the same problem on his 53/39 chainset. To rectify it he just moved the front mech down by 3-4mm and then reconnected the cable and it seemed fine. It seemed that the front mech was not chucking the chain across fast enough.
Hope this is of some help.0 -
Many thanks denzil023, I'll suggest that to LBS as well.

You are wasting your and your LBS's time as well as wasting your money by taking this problem to your LBS. It is not a shifter or mech problem!
Basically your 4550 compact chainset has a 10spd compatible inner ring and a 9 speed compatible outer. The R600 compact which is nearly the same has a 10 speed compatible outer ring (costs more tho - for some reason!)
To get over your shifting problem. Shift from the bigger ring to the smaller 34 ring when you are in the upper (larger sprockets) of your cassette. You can shift from smaller chainring to larger chainring from any sprocket size.
To cure the whole problem get the R600 chainset which looks exactly like the 4550 chainset but costs œ20 more from Parkers. Shimano really do rip of their customers!

Thanks also to you Monst. The bike is only a month old so LBS feel obliged to sort out the problem. I'll take your suggestion to them as well and try to get the problem sorted. Supposed to be doing Etape Caledonia. Hope to get a reliable setup for then.
Many thanks

Took bike back to LBS and asked about getting an R600 chainset.
They got in touch with Massi who agreed to pay for the replacement.
Got bike back yesterday, works fine with the R600.
Many thanks again for all your suggestions.
Bike now ready for Etape Caledonia... not sure about me!
