Upgrading 9spd Tiagra double to compact chainset

Hi Guys,

Not sure if this should be in the Beginners section or not. Basically I've got a Specisialized Allez Sport with a 9spd Tiagra double chainset, which I'm finding doesn't give me enough low gears on the big hills. I'd like to change it for a compact chainset (e.g. this one http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/produ ... pid=106297).

Is there any chance you clever people could advise me what would need to be upgraded for this thing to work? How much roughly would the whole upgrade cost do you think, and would I be better off selling the bike and buying something with the compact already fitted (e.g. Focus Cayo). Cheers dudes!

I posted a topic similar a few weeks back.

Seems it may be easier (and cheaper) to use the tiagra compact and Hollowtech 2 Bottom Bracket.

(No I never did actually get round to doing it myself)

Cheers Jon - stupidly, I did the forum search AFTER I posted. Just saw your post!

How much did it cost for you to get it done? Did you buy the bits online and give them to your LBS?

Haven't actually got round to doing it (yet) but I costed the it to be around œ60 using the tiagra chainset and 105 BB from ChainReactionCycles (cheapest I found on the t'internet). Then you'll have to buy a tool to install them both which is about another œ15 (park tool also from Chainreaction). That's assuming you already have some tools to remove the old chainset.

The thing that's put me off a bit is someone mentioned that the BB Shell of the frame may need to be 'faced' which from what I gather ensures the BB is flat so the cups fit correctly. As to whether the frames need this or not I don't know.
