Kids Ramp?

You're cycling home...

You see that on a stretch of off road cycle path ahead of you going through a housing estate that a bunch of kids are doing exactly what they're meant to be doing; playing outside on their bikes, with a ramp that they've made with a pile of bricks and a plank.

They look at you.

You look a them.

The ramp is right in front of you, you've got space enough to get a good run up.

Do you?

I'm not sure my road bike would enjoy it.

...you could gain a lot of respect and street cred, or make a complete arse of yourself...

I should qualify this a bit I suppose; I commute on a cheapish but robust Raleigh road bike.

    Would you?

  • yes.

if the ramp is no more than two foot i'm confident i can land it with minimal damage to the bike.

Look on youtube and you'll find lots of adult doing face plants on home made ramps trying to impress the kids. Don't go there!!!

Ah, nostalgia. I remember the old pile of bricks and a plank from my days as a yoof. Bring back the Raleigh Tomahawk!

I had six stitches in my head when I was about seven after going over a huge ramp made out of a perambulator and a bendy piece of plywood. I still remember running into the house with blood pouring from my head crying 'cos I thought I was going to get a hiding from my mum!

I suppose it might have been a road bike at one stage. Better to say its an evolved road-tourer-city-bitsa these days. Like the old mop thats had ten heads and five handles.

And if you lived here, you'd see everything including racers, touring bikes, trikes, recumbents, mountain bikes, oversized choppers, BMX's and the occasiona unicycle on the cycle paths. Theres a short stretch that I use every day, it cuts about 3/4 mile (according to the cycle computer I used to have and car dials) off my route.

I have family in Cambridge, so know it well. I know what you mean about all kinds of bikes.
Have you ever been down Gonville Pl (past the swimming pool/kelsey kerridge etc) towards the junction with Regent St? There's a whole 'ped lane/cycle lane/cyle+ped crossing' thing going on. Very funky.

If on a suitable machine, I'd have a go. But I don't think my roadie-like FB would like it so much.

Worst that could happen is I'd fall.

Theres a few such 'inspired' facilities down that way. Some of the crossings are actually quite entertaining. From a distance [:D]

For the record, I didn't. But I instantly regretted not doing so.

  • On my roadie, no. On my SS or my MTB, definitely.
