Left hooked

Got left hooked for the first time ever last night, if I had been going faster I would have been under the wheels but I was half expecting it (I'm always expecting someone to do something stupid, particularly at junctions) so was able to brake in time and carry on.

I was about to cross Park Lane to get onto the Hyde Park cycle path, I was in the left lane and taxi was in the next lane on my right, he cut straight across to turn left onto Park Lane while I was going straight over it.

There's just no way to avoid this, is there? I wasn't in the gutter out of sight, I was in a good position but he still turned across me.

Sounds like good road craft to me on your part. We have to accept, as cyclists, that drivers of heavier vehicles can successfully bully us out of the way while we cannot do the same to them without getting hurt or killed. You anticipated this idiots actions and compensated allowing you to continue on your journey. Hopefully he got home to find his wife in bed with another man.

totalnewbie, you did well. Nothing much else you could have done. Sometimes shouting a warning can help in a situation like that; it irritates the hell out of some drivers, but its worth making them aware that you're there. Don't be bashful about it, if you're going to shout a warning then give it all the welly you can,

Thanks guys. Despite not being that confident I once had a couple of hours of training from CTUK and it does come in useful. Didn't shout because I was concentrating, but you can bet he heard my squealy brakes (they make a rather loud sound which has stopped more than one driver pulling out on me) and it didn't stop him.
